Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: Phase One buys Expression Media - updated

I also hope Phase One don't limit the compatibility to Capture One processed files. I use DPP and this would mean I could no longer use the software.
And what about those who shoot Hasselblad? Phase One would cut them off with such a move. They would cut off many people this way, and this is why I don't think this will happen.
Proprietary software (like Lightroom) is not good. It forces you to work with the products of one company exclusively.
Robert, I have been using Capture One for years now and know that their philosophy has always been one of an 'open software' kind of approach. Yes they make digital backs (Phase One), but their software supports all types of cameras - Capture One is my main image processor, no matter if I am shooting Phase One backs tethered or if I am shooting Canon cameras tethered or import from cards. Capture One actually increased the types of files that you can process with their software to include jpegs and TIFF files, not just their Raw files and you can shoot a tethered Hasselblad straight into Capture One.

General / General Discussion / Expression Media gets bought by Phase One (Free software offer)
|

Good news for us that have been looking to get an update/upgrade on Expression Media. The company was just purchased by Phase One, makers of Capture One software - this company has been doing a fantastic job in upgrading it's own software and has always had a hole in their product offering when it came to anything to do with cataloging, keywording, metatags, ... Yesterday Phase One announced it's purchase of Expression Media. This gives me great hope to see an integration or at least an upgrade from Expression Media's current state of affairs. Phase One just rewrote it's core software a few years ago and did a tremendous job at making a very good digital processing software package so much better. As an added bonus, as an owner of Expression Media (or iView) you can get a free copy of Capture One, an awesome image processor. Read about how to get that free software on my photography blog blog.depuhl.com. If you already own Capture One, you get Expression Media for free. Pascal Depuhl Photography by Depuhl www.depuhl.com

General / General Discussion / Re: I'm back (for a short while)

Peter, First of all thanks for putting all this time into creating a great resource for us to use and to fall back on when it comes to managing our digital assets. I have been implementing your DAM strategies for about 2 years now (not perfectly, but getting better all the time), and have been able to be sure that the jobs are where I expect them to be, when I need to find them. I read yesterday that Phase One - makers of Capture One software - have acquired Expression Media (you're favorite cataloging tool). What are your thoughts on this merger? I like the fact that all users of Expression Media can receive a free version of Capture One software for free through June 30th (I blogged about this yesterday on my photography blog http://blog.depuhl.com/2010/05/phase-one-acquires-expression-media-free-software-offer/. I just had this same issue happen to me. When I change the size of the thumbnails, they show up, but in the list view they are still broken. I have grabbed a back up and the same thing happens. What did you end up doing to get this resolved?

Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / I still have an issue with a CORRUPT catalog
|
on: August 31, 2008, 06:35:14 PM
|
|
Wiped my drive clean over the weekend. Did a complete new OS install and restored files from backup. I have two catalogs: One for the Raw images - which is fine and one for my derivative images, which still is acting strangely. When I go to save the catalog, it starts counting percentages in the lower left corner, were the size of data and catalog is usually displayed. It's not a big catalog - about 1400 images, so I'm thinking of just starting over.
Help!

Catalog is corrupted, some image thumbnails don't show up at all. I just started the DAM system you describe in your book, so it's not that much I would loose if I had to start over - yes I have multiple back ups on time machine and on second drive.
Error can get duplicated when adding one item to catalog or by changing one keyword and re-saving catalog.
Catalog contains 1365 images and is 13.4MB, although iView thinks it is 1.5 GB (with Media being 1.9 GB) - obviously not correct.
I wanted to do a clean system install, wipe the drive and start fresh, 'cause I can't figure out what else could be wrong.

Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / HELP!My iView 3.0 is freaking out :(
|

It all started this morning, when I needed to build a quick web gallery (85 photos) and iView told me that the folder I was writing the gallery to was coming back with an error, I should please select a new folder. I did that. Nothing. Same error. Restarted iView. Same error. Restarted the computer. Same error. Tried a folder on a different drive. Same error. Reinstalled iView. Same error. Gave up and had Capture One build me the web gallery - my client was waiting. Then this evening, did all my DAM stuff and am uploading just a few product shots into my catalog. I did that and saved the catalog - but for the last 30 minutes I have a spinning clock and iView is counting some percentage in the lower left hand side of the screen: By now it's up to over 17000% of who knows what. If I quit iView (I did earlier), the catalog is corrupted and I have to go to a back up (thank you time machine) to restore to an hour ago. Can you help me? Pascal

It all began this morning, when I wanted to create a web gallery that was to contain 85 photos, when I got an error form iView saying that the folder I was writing to was producing an error, I should write the gallery to another folder. Tried that. After a restart. On another drive. After a reinstall of iView. Then I gave up and had Capture One build me the gallery - my client was waiting.
Tonight I added the shots I took today (just a few product shots

DAM Stuff / Keywords and Controlled Vocabulary / Controlled Vocabulary better in Bridge or iView
|
on: August 20, 2008, 09:52:21 AM
|
|
(Short introduction: I am a Miami based photographer that is beginning to implement a DAM system. I have read Peter's book a few times and have been reading parts of this forum.)
I have been reading a lot about key wording though a controlled vocabulary and unsing one makes a lot of sense to me. I would like to know if there is a preference or difference of key wording in Bridge (which seems to allow hierarchical key wording) or in iView (which seems to only allow flat lists).
I may be completely wrong in my understanding of which program lets me do what - so please correct me, where I am wrong. I want to buy David Riecks Controlled Vocabulary and am wondering if it makes a difference to purchase the iView set or the Bridge set (or if the same list can go into both).
