1  General / Comments about the book / Dam book and "Migration from film" on: April 25, 2008, 05:01:12 PM
Great book. Very organized and extremely thorough - I've recommended it as the standard for the archival department at Michigan Opera. It'll be great as is for all our digital images over the las few years and into the future.
But we also have many, slides, photos and negatives. When I reached chapter 9 on migration I was dissapointed to see that slide duplicators was the recommended way to get the old images into digital format.
I had tried those earlier and was never happy with the results.
Then I mentioned to DAM book to Ed Hamrick of Vuescan fame. I noted that his scans can create a TIFF from old slides and negatives with great color restoration; that it was a shame it couldn't go straight to DNG. Turns out Ed thought about it - and went and did it.
The current version of Vuescan can produce DNG !!! This, in my opinion closed the weak link in the process of archiving ALL your images.
We have started using this and are very happy with the results - and that we have a clean workflow to an all DNG archive as recommended in the DAM Book.
Check it out !
