1  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Re: Thinking of dropping dvd backups - not sure now about bucket strategy on: August 23, 2012, 03:05:42 PM
Based on the feedback and some thinking on this I am going to archive to one large yearly bucket called Der_2012 or Raw_2012, and then as follows:
120824_JobName
This way it will line up sequentially and I can keep an easy track on what date I have backed up my archive. Having the date will also give me a marker for my imports into idimager - ie where I'm up to with that.
I'll try this for awhile and see how we go. Thanks all for the comments and advice
Cheers, Dean

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't clear enough in my initial post - I was talking about archiving. I currently archive to dvd plus hdd and I'm thinking of only archiving to hdd now.
The same question stands as in my opening post -  since I'm archiving to large hdd's, I'm not sure what to do with my buckets now ie what size to make them
3  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Thinking of dropping dvd backups - not sure now about bucket strategy on: August 22, 2012, 10:13:43 PM
For quite some time now I have been backing up to dvd plus 2 hdds. My buckets are therefore always around 4.3 gb.
Since hdds are much cheaper and easier, I am thinking of dropping dvd backup and just using hdd.
I'm now not sure about storing in buckets - effectively my new bucket size will be 1tb hard drives.
I'm so used to my old method that I'm not sure how to proceed. Has anyone else done this and/or can offer some advice ?
Thanks, Dean

I am also using WHS combined with cs3/bridge and IDImager.

My question is to the original poster in regards to the file corruption problem that has been identified.

I have experienced some dng file corruptions and I'm not sure if it is from cs3 or idimager. The problem can be avoided by not directly editing to WHS, but what about the cataloging software?
When I apply a category/rating is this considered "editing" the file when it writes to the metadata? I think this is when I experienced the problem

I am also extremely interested in the fix for this issue and would appreciate any updates

Regards Dean
5  Software Discussions / idImager / Any IDImager v4 users out there ? on: December 20, 2007, 11:13:20 PM
I'm new to this DAM stuff but my research so far leads me to think that this might be very good cataloguing software. \
Can anyone comment or offer some insights.
Thanks, Dean

Thanks again for the replies but you're not filling me with confidence.
I generally dont like to "guinea pig" hardware of any discription but in this case I am right in the middle of upgrading my system and it makes sense to do it now.
I willl give it some thought and let you guys know if I do in fact go that way.
THanks again and merry xmas

Thanks for the reply Peter, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
My computer guys have been beta testing it for the last 3-6 months and are really impressed. My problem is that I really need to buy a new system and although this is new technology I might just do it anyway.
From what you know of it atleast - what do you think of the theory behind it?
Cheers, Dean

Does anyone have any ideas or comments/experience with this new server setup in relation to DAM workflow etc
I think its perfect for it but would like to hear from other users. I am about to buy a new computer system and this will be part of it
Thanks, Dean

ps I'm a DAM newbie having just read the book and so I want to set up correctly from the start.

Thanks, Dean Whitling
