DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Best 'reasonably priced' Graphic LCD Monitor?

Thanks for the rec. After doing some net research, I took the plunge on a LaCie LED LCD, the 720 model with the advanced software. 20" Supposedly it has 114% of Adobe RGB spectrum, and stabilizes itself over time, and it also rotates to portrait view. And it has a three year warranty.
I guess it was pricey at 1,300$, but it should last a long time, and it's really the cornerstone of everything that leaves my computer so when I consider it's like buying a lens, that puts it in perspective. I'm excited to be able to see the full gamut of the color range of images, especially the 21 meg ones.
I'll try and post a review after I have used it. And I do have to say it will be nice to toss the CRT because it's such a space hog on my desk, a good two feet deep.

Sony CRT monitor biting the dust. Have a 4 year old Apple 23inch LCD that just doesn't cut it after calibration, so....I'm looking at a couple of monitors in the 1,600 to 2,000 range. Looking at the new Lacie 724 LED LCD, which supposedly has 123% of the Adobe RGB gamut, and also at the Eiso CE240W, which is an older tech., but has the Eiso reputation.
Anyone happy with their LCD? Any Recommendations? Brian S.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: 35 pass of write zeros to HD does not erase fully!

I did note one posters mention of a possibility that I ran the erase with just the erase empty space set. However, I don't believe this to be the case, as surely I would have recovered thousands of files from the original system info. on the PB, and not just data that was NOT system related, and would have been stored in folders on the desktop, as well as 'document's' on the system.
I believe I have been very careful in checking the appropriate boxes, as I have been experiementing with both erasing empty space, and full erases. Again, data was found on my MBP as well, that makes me suspect something to do with laptop architecture. (?),
The only sure thing to do would be to repeat everything exactly, erasing using just Disk Utility, but I am wanting at this point to use Drive Genius, as a new attempt at a clean erase.

Interesting posts. I have no conclusion myself other than to try it again. To recap: I installed Leopard on a separate FW800 drive (after formatting and zeroing once the FW800 drive). I updated Leopard on the FW800 drive. I booted from the FW800 drive. I formatted the drive on the Powerbook first. Then I formatted with a 35 pass of write zeros. This took days.
Then I ran the latest version of Data Rescue on the PB, running, if memory serves me correctly, from the PB, but using the FW800 as the scratch disk, and recovering data to the FW800 drive. I was careful that I was only scanning the PB drive. I then reviewed all the files from the PB, and there were all sorts of files (I don't have an exact amount, somewhere around 200) individually, and found files, such as Quick Book files, etc, that were only specific to that Powerbook and the PB's drive. I was extremely surprised.
I have been experimenting with erasing free space on other drives using disk utility, and then scanning with Data Rescue, and on some occassions there is still data that was not wiped from the free space.
I have wiped drives with disk utility and some are clean. This are external drives, USB type. I am going to have to try the whole process again. I also did a 35 pass on my Mac Book Pro, and, there were still files found from Data Rescue. These files are also specific to that computer.
I have been a victim of Identity theft twice now, once through Pay Pal, and once directly to my bank account, so I'd like to understand this. I do not remember if I clicked on the top icon for the drive or the bottom icon, and whether that would make a difference when I orginally did the pass. However, I find it curious that I again found files on a 35 pass erase on my MBP.
I realize this does not seem feasible. However, on two Laptops this has been the case. I may try erasing the data using Drive Genius, which has a random pass erase, as well as zeros. I also wonder if I had booted from the Leopard disk and ran Disk Utility and erased that way, if thing would have been different.
I'm not a tech guy in understanding how this happened. At some point, I think I will again zero out the portable FW800 drive, install Leopard and update it, install Drive Genius on the portable drive, and then boot from the fw800 drive, and run a 3 pass random wipe with Drive Genius, and try that.
Again, I don't think I am just losing my mind, as the data recovered was only specific to that laptop, the only one in which I was using Quick Books.
I am open to suggestions. Does this help?

After some experimenting, it seems that the data on a boot disk is more sticky than regular non boot hard drives. I am hoping to sell the Powerbook, but as I used it for bookeeping, some of the QuickBook files are still showing up. Seems I will need to replace the hard drive. Is it difficult to replace a hard drive on a Powerbook?

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Erasing drives with disk utility, top or bottom submenu to erase?

Brian, In your security options, are you set to write zeros? This should be very secure, even after one pass.
I was setting Disk Utility to write zeros 7 times.
Data Rescue seems to find all kinds of things, images, files, etc. Doesn't seem to make sense, all should be gone.
By submenu, do you mean the volume names and by top listing do mean the HD name? Was there just one volume (partition) on the HD?
If there was just one volume, erasing that volume's contents would do it. If there are multiple volumes you could erase each one individually or repartition the HD to have one partition and erase that one. (I'd probably do both to be safe.)
Yes, I meant the submenu is the volume name, and the top listing the HD name. Does it matter which one I highlight to run the erase on, top or bottom (ie. hd name, or volume name?)
When I format new drives, it seems to make it work, I have to set the drive as one partition, and then change the setting to GUID, and then erase, so I think the drive was done that way, with one partition.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Erasing drives with disk utility, top or bottom submenu to erase?

Real newbie question here I guess. I have an old powerbook I was planning on selling.
I used a separate start up drive to boot from, and ran Disk Utility from it to erase the HD on the Powebook. I chose 7 pass erase.
Under Disk Utility, I don't remember if I chose the top or bottom listing for the drive on the left on Disk Utilty where it lists the drives (ie. top choice is 158.2 GB WDC1600JSS, etc, and the lower choice submenu was Macintosh HD).
I ran Data Rescue two on the Powerbook drive to verify all data was gone, and, it was not, even after 7 pass erase.
So, does it matter in Disk Utility if I choose the top listing for a drive, or the submenu listing?
Am I better off using Drive Genius to erase a drive?

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Very strange behavior from Seagate FreeAgent Drive

Unexplainable behavior, data still available? Specs: Mac Pro-7 Gigs RAM. OS 10.5.7. Seagate 750 Gig Free Agent External drive, connected with either e-sata, FW 400, or USB 2.0. Storing video files on a separate Seagate Free Agent Drive. Transfers would Freeze. Unplugged the drive, re plugged, got it going again. More freezing. Plug and unplug. Drive mounted Sometimes on restart, sometimes not. Disk utility Repair Disk failed, no error message, just freeze. Ran Disk Warrior 4.1.1, rebuild ok Tried Drive Genius Defrag - unmount problems, and freeze File icons show for the files, but transfers to or from result in freeze. Plug and unplug only to get the drive mounted. What to do? Brian
