DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: ALERT - Seagate Firmware Problem - Data at Risk - Details

Details for the 1,250$ Seagate Flush. Mac Pro - 2.66GHZ 7 Gigs Ram Burly 5 Bay Box - JOBD Sonnet D500P Box - JOBD Burly 1 Bay Box Sonnet E4P card 8X 1.5TB Seagate drives with bad serials numbers, but alleged ok/or 'marginal' firmware, ie> CC1H
Problem: All drives in the Burly or Sonnet Box will autodismount from the desktop after 15 minutes.
Attempts to fix: Repair permissions. Re-seat E4P card in Mac Pro. Dust internals of Mac Pro, Burly, and Sonnet Boxes. Power on and off the box. Switch e-sata cables. I even put an old 400Gig drive in the MacPro, and installed a new OSX on the drive, and.....all the box drives dismount. Contacted Sonnet. Contacted MacGurus. Sonnet says not a problem with their card or box. MacGurus says they have mixed results with the alleged 'ok' CC1H firmware.
Puzzle. The 1.5 Seagate drives will stay mounted in a single Burly box. But, this is consistent with reports of the Seagate drives having problems in multi bay boxs, either as JOBD or RAID.
Future attempts at remedies: Call Seagate (I now call them SeaCrap). I expect they will claim the CC1H firmware is ok. Contact Amazon, and see what the chances are of getting money back after I sat on these drives for 6 months.
Probable outcome? Stuck with 1,250$ of SeaCrap.
Ultimate Solution? Put the drives in a new Toyota, with Tiger Woods driving, and tell them all to hit the road.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / 1,250$ straight into the toilet - Seagate

In this economy, what a horrendous bummer. About 6 months ago, I bought 8 1.5 TB seagate drives, and 2 1TB drives, for about 1,250$. I had not had time to install them until now. I thought I was safe, as they all have the CC1H firmware, which Seagate CLAIMS are ok. But, guess what? They are not. Any of these drives in my Burly or Sonnet JOBD drives will autodismount after 15 minutes. Complete waste.
The reviews on the 2TB Seagate drives are awful, 50% failure rate. Seagate and Toyota must be owned by the same company.
Thanks Seagate.

I am having a bit of an issue trying to find the right thread here for Seagate firmware issues, so I'll try here. I am having the problem that many with the 1.5tb drives have, of freezing and dismounting from the desktop. I have the bad number drives: ST31500341AS, but....the drives say they have the CC1H firmware, which according to the Seagate website are ok as far as firmware, and that if I were to run the firmware update, it would disable the drives.
Am wondering if anyone has bad drives that have the CC1H firmware, but are STILL having trouble with the drives.
Called Seagate, but of course, this is a 'company holiday' and they are closed.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: e-sata Sonnet JOBD box drives dismounting - Bad Seagate?

Now the culprit may be the 'new' Seagate 1.5TB drives that I bought (sadly, 1,000$ of what may turn out to be useless bricks). These are the 1.5 TB models that are notorious for freezing and failing. Some online say a 35% fail rate. The ST31500341AS models.
I think there is info. on this forum about this problem. Any links would be helpful. Brian

Ok, this is frustrating. Thought the problem with the drives in external boxes (Burly and Sonnet) dropping from the desktop (dismounting), after 15 minutes was due to a poor power supply with the drive boxes. The Sonnet box has only an 80W power supply, so I stopped using that box, and just the Burly, which has a 300W source. Now the Burly is dropping the drives as well.
Only changes to the Burly 5 bay box was adding a Seagate 1.5 7200rpm drive. I know there was an issue with some Seagate drives, but would that cause the whole set of drives to drop? Tried: repairing permissions. Restarting. Updated drivers for boxes. Took boxes apart and dusted them out. Switched cables. Powered on and off the drive boxes and Mac Pro.
How to figure this one out?

I had some e-mail with Neal at Sonnet, and he says that this unit has an 80W power supply, and the new ones have 220W. He claims the power supply must be tanking. For 150$ I can upgrade the power. I think I'll just stay with the 5 Bay Burly box. It's got a 300W supply all ready, plus each tray is fan cooled, as well as a master fan. Don't think one can beat the Burly boxes.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / e-sata Sonnet JOBD box drives dismounting after 15 minutes

I have: Sonnet D5000P e-sata drive box - 5 bay, and a Burly box with 5 bays, all connected to a Sonnet E4P esata card inside a Mac Pro.
The Burly drives are fine, but recently the Sonnet box drives all dismount from the desktop after 15 minutes or so. I cleaned out the box, changed cables, powered down and up, reset the card, and reapaired permissions.
Any ideas? Thanks, Brian

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Best 'reasonably priced' Graphic LCD Monitor?

After a week of use, I am still happy with the monitor. Of course, being able to theoretically see 114% of the Adobe RGB gamut, and theoretically 25% more than I WAS seeing on a CRT sort of complicates things. All the images that looked good on the CRT now look like they have a reddish cast to the shadows.
Was that there, and I could not see it? And then this all makes me want to know more about color management besides using an eye1 monitor device. And of course, I don't have time to learn that.
Overall, the reds just seem to be screaming, almost cartoonish when looking at files corrected on a crt. I will have to edit and adjust some new work on the LED LCD, and see what happens in print.
Still, to see the subtley of the shadow detail, and see, as far as I can tell, 100% accurate sharpness, is quite something.

Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / In PS, how to float all the windows separately as default.

In PS 4/CS 4, I absolutely cannot stand how PS puts all the open files in tabs. Yep, I go to Arrange, and Float All in Windows, and then I save that workspace, but when I open PS again, the files go back to tabs. How do I permanently have PS put all images as separate floating boxes, not in a tab?

Last thing. I have no comparison to the famed Eizo monitors, so I can't say how this guy compares. I don't think the Eizo is using LED tech, if that makes a difference. I do know the prices for those Eizo's is very high. 2,000$ or more was just too much. More later as I continue to use the LaCie.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Snap, Crackle, and POP - New LaCie 720 LED LCD
|
on: August 26, 2009, 08:31:39 PM
|

I received the new LaCie 720 LED LCD monitor today, the 20 inch version with the advanced software, for 1,300$. 20 inches is fine, as I am using it next to my old 23" Apple Cinema display. Plus, the 20" model rotates to portrait view, which the other larger models do not. Plus of course, it was cheaper than the larger versions.
It comes with a nice hood, has good adjustments to height and angle, and outstanding viewing angle. I had an existing Gretage Macbeth eye1 calibrator, which is the same as the LaCie version. I uninstalled the Eye One software, and put in the LaCie version. It took a bit to learn the screen display buttons, but once I got it calibrated.....all I can say is wow.
I'm seeing SO much more than before with the old Sony CRT. It's almost startling. But, it's all accurate, and the CRT just could not handle the gamut. It's also nice to have the display fill up the screen edge to edge instead of the CRT's smaller view.
The sharpness is just right. Not crunchy and harsh like an Apple display, but smooth and right on, and not soft like a CRT.
I just checked some more RAW files, and all I can say now is....seeing as how I have no girlfriend.... I may be in love. I have to name her.....I like 'S' names...maybe Sammy.
Anyway, the next step would be to run some prints on my Epson 3800 with ColorBurst RIP and see how she looks in print. I don't quite understand what the extra couple hundred bucks I paid for some advanced software calibration that was installed, but that's the way it came from Mac Mall.
I have to conclude by saying that first impressions are stellar, and I am quite happy I made the switch. The 45 pound Sony CRT is now out on the deck, waiting to be disposed of.
