31  General / Photo Blogs / Re: Share your favorite photo blogs here on: November 01, 2009, 08:04:54 PM
I've been running a new blog, The Wanderer's Apprentice (http://www.wanderersapprentice.com) for the last few months.  I am mostly blogging about using natural history to better understand your subjects and how that can improve your nature and wildlife photography.

I'd love to see some of you guys come visit.

32  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Searching EXIF Data on: September 21, 2009, 05:42:12 AM
I am working on an article where I need to use images taken with a specific lens.  Any idea on how to search the EXIF data so I can pull up all images taken with a particular lens.  I tried the basic search but it didn't seem to work.

Thanks!

33  General / GPS/ Geotagging / GPS Data after the fact with iView on: June 12, 2009, 10:44:18 AM
I have a handful of files that are massive stitched files of panoramas and want to add some GPS coordinates into the metadata after the fact.  Anyone have any experience doing this in iView after the fact?

Thanks!

34  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Cataloging PSB Files on: June 06, 2009, 12:41:26 PM
Brilliant Peter.  I'll do exactly that.

At least the files will still fit in a Bucket though I must say this morning as I was filling buckets with 1 file at a time with a couple weeks of works, it was rather humorous and tedious...

Wishing I was thinking BluRay

Anyway, thanks again Peter.  I look forward to taking a crack at the new book this fall when things slow down a bit.

I have some massive panorama files that can't be saved as PSD due to the 2GB limit and are therefore PSB.  However, iView doesn't appear to recognize PSBs.  Any ideas?  Would EM recognize them?  Am I finally going to have to make the switch?

Should/Can I convert them to tiffs?  I don't know what file size limits tiffs have.  The files are approximately 18000x9000 pixels with a bunch of layers weighing in at right around 4 GB.

Any ideas?

That did it.

I knew it was something stupid like that but I thought I had checked that option.

Peter, thanks as always.

37  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Files won't open in PS CS4 on: May 27, 2009, 12:21:49 PM
For the longest time, when I double clicked a file in IVMP, it would open in Photoshop CS3.  I installed CS4 the other day and it worked fine for a couple days then I think there was a crash or something.  In any case, now when I double click on a DNG or Tiff, it just goes to the Media view tab.

When I right click, go to Open With --> it then says "Default Application".  CS4 is listed in teh list and if I select it, it opens in CS4 but I can't get CS4 to be the default app again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Peter,

I solved this by naming them with a number int eh front.  For Example, 1Location, 2City, etc.

Works just fine.

Joe,

I'm not exactly sure what you mean.  Why do I want to go through the trouble or why does Seagate want to go through the trouble?

I went through the trouble because I had already picked up a pair of drives before the problem became real well known.

I'd do it again because you just can't beat the price/size/speed/etc.

Just wanted to post an update.  I spent the morning working on images on this drive and it was singing along just wonderfully.  Before the new firmware I would have had a crash at least once.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair of drives and hope to do so early in the new year.

Best,
Drew
41  DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / New Firmware for Seagate 1.5 TB Drives on: December 12, 2008, 09:34:17 AM
I just finished updating my 2 1.5 TB drives with the new firmware and so far so good.

I was experiencing the random freezing which typically would then lock up my system as it tried to access the drive.  According to seagate support, this is fixed with a new firmware.

In order to get the firmware, you have to call Seagate support and give them your serial # of the drive.  They then email you a code and link and you download the file.

The included instructions are for a floppy disk image and bootable cd image.  All are windows instructions however the bootable CD will work on an Intel Mac.

My only difficulty was trying to perform the update while the drive was in a Burly Enclosure, things kept timing out.  I removed the drive from the enclosure, put it in the tower and bingo.

While all my data came through just fine, be sure to backup your disk just in case.

I haven't had much time to experiment but a quick few tests seem to show a massive improvement.  I'll post again if I see something to the contrary.

Best,
Drew

I've got one of the 1.5 TBs running my entire archive at the moment and a second one that has it backed up (spun up only once to copy everything so far).  No problems here.

Granted, the entire archive is also on DVDs (most on 2 copies)...  If I do have a problem, it won't be the end of the world.

My understanding is that the problems with the 1.5TB don't result in data loss unless they are in a RAID setup.  Mine are just in JBOD.  Granted I am holding off for a little while to get another set...

I am ingesting Raws from a D3.  I eventually will convert to DNG but I don't do that until later in my workflow (after adjustments and sorting).  XMPs are being generated but Bridge CS3 isn't reading them.  I have tried both my laptop and desktop.

Just did some more investigating.  Opened PS CS3 and File Info doesn't show anything as well.

Below is the last ingestion from the log.  I canceled it just to double check to see if it was working instead of taking the time to let all the images download..

Marc,

A couple weeks ago I sat down and did all the setup for II3 but didn't have a chance to run any tests.  Now I am trying to download some images but I am not getting any of my IPTC info with the images.

Any suggestions?  Oh yeah, I'm on a Mac on 10.5.

Thanks,
Drew
45  Software Discussions / ImageIngester and ImageVerifier / Re: Custom Location of Preference Files on: September 20, 2008, 01:14:21 PM
Thanks Marc, I figured that.

One thing about the reliability.  Typically, the computer keeps a local copy of the files on the computer and then only updates from the remote server when something changes.  So, in reality you will always be loading a local file so it works even when you don't have an internet connection.

It was just a thought.  Wasn't sure if it would be a matter of setting the paths for the files to a variable and a button to define the variable or if it would be a lot more than that.

Thanks again for all your work.  I can't wait to start using the multi-card ingest.

Best,
Drew
