1  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Re: Expression or Portfolio or ... something else for 50k+ images DAM needs on: July 01, 2010, 11:03:56 AM
Thanks John. I optimize it regularly and it's a fast machine but it's pokey. And there is till the issue of needing multiple catalogs open at the same time. I just don't think LR is viable as the image count grows.
2  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Expression or Portfolio or ... something else for 50k+ images DAM needs on: July 01, 2010, 08:16:35 AM
I've been using Lightroom for several years and while it's great for certain things, it's become unwieldy/slow now that I've got so many images. And my step-brother and technical editor of the DAM Book, Michael Stewart, has told me I'm overdue for a DAM switch to something that will better suit my needs.
I'll do my initial metadata and selections in PhotoMechanic, adjust the images in Lightroom (with a catalog specific for the job), and then will want to put the dngs into a more robust cataloging application. Here are my needs:
-have to be able to have multiple catalogs open at once
-have to be able to browse 10's of 1000's of images (ideally 100's of 1000's)
-have to be able to view dng/cr2/nef/psd/jpeg
-ideally I'd like the catalogs to be able to be opened on different computers, saved, and then be able to be reopened on other computers; don't need same catalog open on different computers at same time
-need basic and smart sets ability within catalog
-don't want major keyword hassles migrating from Lightroom 3
-ideally, the ability for the cataloging program to scan a hard drive for new images matching certain specified keywords. Since my weddings, corporate work, studio portraits are all on the same hard drives, I'd like to be able to have a smart initial and then incremental import of new images based on my Intellectual Genre field

Thanks in advance!
3  Workflow Discussions / Tethered Shooting / Tethered shoot into a custom crop? on: March 21, 2008, 03:55:11 PM
I was wondering if it was possible to somehow shoot into a "custom crop" as you do tethered shooting? I have a regular client that I shoot their products for every couple months. And we always have to crop them all to the same proportions. It would be great to shoot into a crop, or somehow "place" the image into a crop. I'm able to use Live View with my 1D mk III.
Any suggestions?

4  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Foregoing DVDs for Derivatives Backup on: March 20, 2008, 05:47:22 AM
I am wondering if other users are opting to forgo the DVD backup option for the derivatives. It seems like it will be a real hassle keeping those files organized by work date and therefore hard to reliably backup to DVD. I will already be backing them up to a local hard drive as well as a remote one.
I noticed in a handout that Peter used at a DAM seminar I attended (which was great!) that he does not specifically talk about DVD backup of derivatives.

5  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / EM Camera Serial Number Field? on: March 13, 2008, 03:59:27 PM
I do not see a spot in the EM Info Panel to show the serial number of the camera used for the photo? I can see the model (Canon EOS 1-D) but not the actual body's serial number. I really need that because it's a simple way for me to figure out which photographer at a multi-camera event shot which photos. I can see it/sort by it in Lightroom. Is it available in EM?

6  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: 2 people/computers building one library on: March 13, 2008, 05:57:44 AM
Regarding my idea to build a catalog simultaneously on two computers (two people working side by side):
Sounds like a reasonable approach would be to not make any catalog sets initially, but instead make sure that I have some specially named keywords in both computers' files, with names like CatExteriors, and then, once all files are on the master computer, create an Exteriors catalog set on the master computer and bring everything with that keyword into that new Exteriors catalog set, and then delete the keyword from the files.
And as far as making sure the keywords are written identically (and semantically synced), I thought I could start a google docs spreadsheet, sorted alphabetically, that each of us adds to or checks for already existing.
Clearly, some supervision and pre-thought/testing is needed but this sounds workable.

I'm just about ready to import all my files and build the keywords. Ideally, my assistant will be doing a lot of the work concurrently on my second machine as I work on my machine (on which the final catalog will reside). I was wondering if it was possible to share keywords in this process? I want to make sure the keywords are identical but to also save time by working concurrently.
I believe there is a way for each of us to work on a different catalog and then merge the two catalogs somehow (?), with common categories being merged and separate ones being created on the  machine without them initially?
Has anyone else done things like this and what's worked well?

8  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Screwy iView Data Entry fields: blacked out on: March 11, 2008, 07:33:09 AM
I'm sure I'll want to post an image again. How does one do that (is there a help page for this forum)?

check out this screenshot of my Enter Keywords dialog box. What's up? I'm using iView 3 Trial for Mac.

10  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: iView not retaining custom View Options on: March 10, 2008, 04:05:23 PM
Peter
Yes, the View Option custom sets are great. But I was wondering if there was a way to have it have remember the last chosen view set for Thumbnails when I switch to Thumbnails, rather than staying with the last setting that had been applied to the List view for example. It seems like EM2b is able to do that.
Hope I'm making sense here.

11  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Use Locations as Keywords or no? on: March 10, 2008, 09:29:52 AM
Thanks Peter! I really appreciate all your timely information. As always, your advice is very sound. So, it sounds like unless the image is about that place (such as an exterior shot or interior empty room shot), you don't tag the location in the image's keywords.
Your response reminds me of another question: can I tag images on my website automatically with metadata (such as keywords and location, genre etc) and have that be meaningful in google?
12  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / iView not retaining custom View Options on: March 10, 2008, 08:57:57 AM
When I customize my List, Thumbnail and Media view options (CMD + J), it does not retain the settings. I can save them and use the drop down to re-select. I pressed the "use as Default" button. But it won't automatically switch to my setting for that particular view.
I noticed in EM2 beta it does retain this info. What am I doing wrong in iView?

13  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Use Locations as Keywords or no? on: March 10, 2008, 08:31:33 AM
Though it would be redundant to add my locations, such as "Chicago Planetarium" to my keywords as well as my Location/Places field, is it advisable nonetheless to do that? Same with "Intellectual Genre". If so, why?

14  DAM Stuff / Naming Issues / Re: Studios with Multiple Photographers File Naming Conventions? on: March 09, 2008, 04:10:05 PM
I mean the person transforming the DNG into a layered tif-type file. I'll know based on file location whether a DNG has been adjusted so I don't think it's necessary to notate that status in the file name. But that leads me to another question, actually: does it make sense to have my DNG files also carry some kind of status code at the end of the file so that all my files (DNGs, TIFs, JPEGs) have the same number of characters. Something like:
acp_20080202_150130_8800_arcr.DNG (signifying something like "adjusted raw client ready". I'm not into it solely because of the neatness factor but because that way any text operations on filenames could be performed on any file regardless of the stage it's at with the same script, rather than needing to be careful of variations in filename number of characters.

Ah, yes. I'm still trying to make this transition away from metadata-based filenames! What is the recommended field for the worker's id in the metadata?
