1  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Re: drag into collections takes incredibly long time even with 64 bit version on: March 12, 2010, 04:52:51 AM
Hi,
I finally found the answer to my problem myself:

The point is that it takes so long regardless if the photos had been imported several days ago or not. That means it is slow regardless if there are other processes or not.

O.k. I found a workaround which speeds up the process. Somehow Lightroom doesn´t like the "drag and drop". It works much faster if you don´t create the collection first. Instead you select the photos and then click <Ctrl> + L  to come to the library. There you select "New Collection" and select "Include selected photos" . This way it works a lot faster. Just wanted to let you know.

2  Software Discussions / Lightroom / drag into collections takes incredibly long time even with 64 bit version on: March 10, 2010, 03:40:30 AM
Windows 7
Lightroom 2.0 64 bit
RAWs

I organize my photos with collections within Lightroom.

Example:

wedding
  001_anna_francesco
  002_sonja_frank
  003_nicole_thomas
    working_raws
    working_raws_assistent
....originals_dngs
....derivatives_jpgs
....go_to_catering
....go_to_reception_hotel

If I come back home from a weddig I first import my RAW files into Lightroom and then immediately drag them into the collection "working_raws" and after that I do the same with my assistents files. We both have made several thousand photos and it takes a horrible long time to drag them into the collections. As far as I remember Lightroom even crashed sometimes last season. Now I upgraded to Lightroom 2.0 64 bit and thought that I will not have this problem any longer with the 64bit version of Lightroom. I didn´t have a wedding yet, but I realize that even if I drag just a few images it takes an amazing long time. I have the impression that it even got worse. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, Ingrid

Dear John,

thanks! I don´t know how the stars came into the preset, but that was the cause of it. Thanks a lot for your help!

4  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Original media file not available even though restored on: November 06, 2008, 09:38:49 AM
Hi,

my iView indicates that the "Original media file not available". It is true that they were lost because my hard drive broke. But now I restored everything to the same drive with the exact same drive name and the same directory name and the same file name, but iView still doesn´t see the file.

What can I do?

I appreciate your help!

5  General / General Discussion / Re: Instructions IPTC Field - File Handling on: September 10, 2008, 07:16:49 AM
Dear Fredrik,

thank you very much!
I tried it like this: ag, ca, ju   in one field, but I couldn´t use the "find" function in LR. There are options like "Contains All" "Begins With" . I thought it should work with "Contains All" but it didn´t. For some reason with "xq" in the beginning it works. I don´t understand the logic, but it works. Thank you for your help.

The colors are not enogh. I have several assistants, caterers of weddings, etc. to whom I give the photos.

Thanks!

Ingrid

Hi,

there is no answer to my question, but I am still looking. I don´t know, if it´s good to use the instructions field. I am looking right now if I can filter this field like a keyword, but couldn´t find this yet. This doesn´t make sense to me.

How do you handle this?

7  Software Discussions / Lightroom / 2 Star Rating on every imported photo on: July 22, 2008, 03:37:34 AM
I am just starting to build up a catalogue in LR. All the photos which are rated already with different stars get 2 stars during the import. I don´t want to loose my rating. The only thing I can do so far is to update the Metadata. But that takes a lot of time.  What´s wrong? Is it the same with your photos? Always 2 stars on every photo? What can I do? The ratings are from the  Bridge for example and I want to keep them.

Thanks,
Ingrid
8  General / General Discussion / Instructions IPTC Field - File Handling on: July 15, 2008, 03:14:11 AM
Hi,

I still use the keyword fields for instructions. I use short forms which only I can read and which have the meaning:

be: needs to be worked on
co: needs more contrast
je: initials for an assistant
loo: goes to stock agency
....

But this is not the best way to do it, because the agency might be disturbed if I do that too much. I am looking for an instruction field which can be read in any important program and which can be filtered like keywords. In Lightroom there is a field with the name "Instructions"

How do you handle this?

Thanks,
Ingrid

Where can I change the size of the scratch file? I stillhope that I can rescue my catalogue somehow.

Thanks,
Ingrid
10  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: cannot open the catalogue on: July 12, 2008, 01:15:08 PM
I guess it has to do with the size. But this doesn´t matter now. Is there a way to open it somehow?

Thanks,
Ingrid
11  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / cannot open the catalogue on: July 12, 2008, 01:06:26 PM
Hi,

I activated the function somewhere that there is a regular backup during my work with iView. I didn´t realize that there is no backup of my catalogue. Now the catalogue is corrupt and I cannot open it and there is no backup. I don´t know why this happended. It was far from having to much photos integrated. But it happened after importing a lot of photos. Somehow it still opend for a while (1-2 minutes). I managed to delete some photos and it worked fine again. Then I imported photos again, because it did not have a lot of photos integrated. Somewhere I read that you can import about 60.000.  It has 1.2 GB.

Is there a possibility to get this catalogue working again? If I want to open it I get the error "The command couldn´t be completed, because an error occurred while reading the catalog. [-54]

Thanks,
Ingrid
12  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Backup every 30 min? on: July 12, 2008, 12:55:56 PM
Is there a function somewhere in Lightroom where I can change the preference settings so that there is a backup every hour or so? Right now I always have to exit Lightroom and open it again so that a backup is made. But what if I am so concentrated on my work and forget it. I hade some crashes already and I want to make sure that my work is saved every 30 min for example.

Do you know how to do this?

Thanks,
Ingrid
13  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Which arguments still speak against Lightroom? on: July 12, 2008, 12:32:55 PM
I am in the process to change from iView to Lightroom because iView is not updated any longer. Peter always wrote that Lightroom is not good enough for the DAM workflow yet. But there were a view updates of Lightroom since. I was looking through the thread to find information. Is there a fairly new thread on this topic? If not, what are the negative points of LR in comparison with iView?

Thanks,
Ingrid
14  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Convert to jpg - Scale to fit - fixed Width and Height - need percentage on: March 08, 2008, 04:14:27 AM
Hi Peter,

thanks. I will try to get the dng converter.

Sorry for the multiple threads but I wanted to post the different problems at the right position. One was definitely a Photoshop RAW converter problem, the other one an iView problem.

o.k. next time I do it the other way aroung

Thanks again for the help!
15  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: want to save special files to bigger jpgs - It´s not possible???? on: March 07, 2008, 03:19:33 PM
Hey,

at least I can do a bit now. I found out that if I delete "Adobe Bride" from the "Helper Applications" I can open more than one photo out of iView into the RAW Converter. This is the best for interpolation anyway.

BUT: I can only open 60 photos at a time. If I select more there is NO reaction. I don´t like this.

At least I can go on working now.

Best,
Ingrid
