Hi there, Just wanted to inform that our company unveils a new version of the DAM for small teams - Daminion 0.9.8b. The new updated version of Daminion now has support for offline files and improved file/folder management capabilities, including: - Moving (drag and drop) files to folders
- Adding sub-folders
- Renaming folders
This latest version allows the location of folders to be updated (re-linked). For example, if a folder is moved to a location outside Daminion, it’s now possible to simply re-link to the new location without having to re-import the entire contents of the folder. There are more than 20 other minor improvements and bug-fixes: http://daminion.net/downloadStandalone Standalone version is Free while Daminion Server is available at an affordable price (Home Server costs $195)

The latest Daminion 0.9.8 version is available for testing with improved File/Folder management capabilities: http://daminion.net/user-forum/index.php?/topic/456-the-latest-daminion-builds/page__view__getnewpostIn this version the compatibility with standalone third-party photo organizers (like LR, MediaPro, IdImager) was improved: you can specify various tag hierarchy delimiters that helps you to easily migrate to Daminion. All image annotations will be automatically imported from the metadata according to IPTC/XMP/MWG/Native specifications in a range of media formats: All Camera RAW formats, raster and vector images (AI, EPS, InDD), MS Office, PDF, audio and video formats. The next series of the file/folder management improvements are planned to the 0.9.9 version (Jan, 2013).

Becky, using a standalone photo management software in a multi-user environment might cause the potential problems: - There is no guarantee that your media management system crashes and will damage your content due to simultaneous attempts to change it by multiple users.
- Someone in your team can accidentally “screw up” your assets.
- You can’t see the changes made by other users in the same media database till you restart the media database software, or refresh the opened catalog.
- Users may configure access rights on the Windows NTFS level, but it is extremely laborious, inconvenient and limited.
- You can’t limit an access to your content for users by roles: Restrict to download your hi-res photos for guests or restrict to users with Reader rights to change the content.
Full article here: http://bit.ly/q5wUoqI guess the only safiest solution in your case is Portfolio (because you are on Mac). Because it's a true multi-user solution.

Workflow Discussions / Multi-User Configurations / Re: Daminion - a new multi-user photo management solution

This is the most frequently asked question We have no plans to port Daminion for Mac at the moment. Our roadmap for 2011 includes releasing the Daminion Server and continuously improving the products functionality, performance and stability. But our Server is built on .NET platform that can be deployed on a Mac via Mono Framework. So I don't exclude the possibility to port the Server and Client to Mac in the future. We don't test Daminion with virtual environment (like Parallels Desktop or Wine) on a Mac.

Hi Peter, I bought your book a few years ago and we discussed with you about our PicaJet Photo Organizer software. Honestly it's the best book about DAM for photographers even after 4 years. I've seen the neighbor topic about the request for networked photo management system and would like to introduce our Daminion for your auditory. This is a new server based photo management software program with TRUE multi-user capabilities. We develop it since 2008. We are also developers of the PicaJet and RoboImport - tools for digital photographers. Daminion Standalone version is free. It focused on image cataloging, supports XMP, IPTC, MWG, hierarchical tags, relative paths to the catalogs, version control, saved searches, etc… I hope you like it! Daminion Server will be available very soon. I'd be appreciating to hearing any feedback from you about Daminion. Thank you! - Regards Murat Korkmazov http://daminion.net

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: BluRay drives for PC

Hi Neil, Blu-ray disks are made from the same materials as the common DVD or CD, just with the higher density. And the more disks you have the more chance that some of them might be corrupted after some period of time. What will be with your disks after say 10 years, 15 years? I don't know, and you don't know. For better insurance you need to backup your photos on multiple CD/DVD/Blu-Ray disks. This is not a question of insurance but also a question of convenience. Operate with multiple disks with low I/O speed. I guess today the price of 1 GB of HDDs is very low, so you might to consider backup your photo collection to HDD. For example Seagate Barracuda Green (2TB) costs as low as $125. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2382026,00.aspYou can also consider a NAS with RAID. Just my thoughts, probably if the collection is not large the multiple Blu-ray disks is a good option. -- Regards Murat
