1  Software Discussions / RAW File Converters / Adobe Lens Profile Downloader on: December 10, 2010, 06:32:50 PM
I'm curious to know what people think about Adobe's new corollary to their Lens Profile Creator — the community-oriented Lens Profile Downloader. Has anyone used it? What do you think of it? Are people even aware of it?

I think it has great potential. Adobe's been trying to play catch-up after releasing the Profiler (profiles are time-consuming to make, and there was no clear or easy way to request profiles from Adobe or the larger community).

However, it definitely feels a little half-baked. The need for selecting a profile based on the camera model is was built with is slim (if I am a D300 owner, I am equally interested in profiles created with the D90 or D300s, as well as the D7000 and so on). More importantly, there's no field for LENS MAKE. Hello? This means that if Nikon/Canon/Sony, Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron all make a 12-24mm lens, there's no easy way to figure out which one the listed profile is actually for. More oddities: Apple listed under Camera Make? And a random half of the brands' names in full uppercase?

Here's the info we need when selecting a lens profile for RAW conversion:
  • Camera Make
  • Lens Make
  • Lens Model
  • Crop Factor
  • RAW or JPEG (do people use lens profiles for JPEG correction?)
  • Camera Model (only necessary for JPEGs or if crop factor is unknown)
  • Profile Creator
  • Profile Creation Date
  • User Rating & Comments

Anyone else interested in this utility?

2  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: EM2, Snow Leopard / i7, General Performance on: December 05, 2010, 12:32:53 PM
My previous platforms include:

2008 iMac w/ Snow Leopard & Leopard
2007 MacBook Pro w/ Snow Leopard & Leopard
2004 PowerBook G4 w/ Leopard & previous OSs

... all worked fine.

Still experiencing this issue intermittently, with no discernable pattern. Let me know if anyone else has ever seen this...

An issue I just started experiencing is that EM2 freezes up for several seconds (spinning rainbow) after I select (single click) an image (or select all images) in Thumbnail mode. I only noticed this after upgrading to a new MacBook Pro i7. The ironic thing is that EM worked flawlessly on all my older machines, but on the new one I now have to wait 10-15 seconds after selecting an image before I can tag it or do whatever I need to do. You can imaging how frustrating this is. Very silly. Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Any ideas?

Can't wait for a PhaseOne iteration of the software, after festering in Microsoft's basement for a few years (ok, ok, it wasn't THAT bad Smiley

I think color spaces OR monitor calibration could easily be the issue. Make sure both accounts on your computer are set up with the same color profile, and try to figure out which color space Aperture is exporting to (perhaps try sRGB for most flexibility)

I think you're right on that one, good job explicating it even without 100% certainty  Smiley

6  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Exporting/Extracting iView Thumbnails? on: October 01, 2007, 06:01:21 AM
iView has a simple-- though somewhat non-intuitive-- way to do this. Select the thumbs you'd like to extract, then go to Action > Extract Metadata..., then click on "Image thumbnails." From there you choose which folder the thumbnails will be placed. I hope this answers your question. It is a great little feature, perfect for copyrighting and the like.

7  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Using IVMP to convert DNG to high-res TIF on: June 08, 2007, 08:27:08 PM
You have a right to be concerned; there is a difference in quality, for me anyway. The embedded preview, even at full size, is already highly compressed. I also love the Convert File option for (small output) sharing my photos with clients and friends, but would never use the DNG preview (which iView has to convert & compress AGAIN in conversion) for a final image for high-end use (unless it were absolutely necessary). I usually just bite the bullet and batch convert my higher-rated images using Bridge or PS.

Hope that helps,

I also haven't gotten the crash on my PowerBook. On the contrary, I have found that my command-f search function, which for me has frustratingly never worked on any version if iView, now does.

What upsets me about EM is the fact that it does not import any of your preferences or templates from iVMP. I also find the icons harder to decipher--the colored ones from iV were recognizable at a glance. Good thing I never use them anyway. I agree with J Harding:

I recently received the email with the link for the free upgrade to Expression Media. What did I upgrade to?

I don’t see any significant changes except for the fact that I lost my preferences that I had set up, as well as the Rapid Fixer, and the Digital Railroad plugins. Is this just a transparent upgrade to handle the metamorphosis for the change over to Microsoft and their future support? Are there additional bells and whistles I haven’t seen yet? Do I need to uninstall the original iView software?

I feel I'm in the dark on this new upgrade???

10  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Re: memory used by iview media pro on: June 26, 2006, 12:08:42 AM
I have heard that it's best to get as much memory as you can afford right now (like the others are saying, 1-2gb).  I currently operate on a 1.5ghz Apple PowerBook, and even with only 512mb of ram, after two years the machine and its performance have been consistenly exceptional (just a tad slow with photoshop cs; iview is fast but slows as the catalog size grows past a few hundred mb).

hope that helps,
11  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Extract jpg from catalog on: June 25, 2006, 11:59:19 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this can be done by selecting the image(s) and clicking Actions> Extract Metadata and selecting Image Thumbnails, then choosing the folder in which you would like the JPEGs to be saved.  Peter, I'm surprised you were not aware of this feature!

12  DAM Stuff / DNG / Re: How many are including originals? on: June 24, 2006, 01:56:14 PM
I currently do not embed originals, but I still have most of my NEFs saved on a hard drive, and plan to keep them archived separately on DVD if I ever need to come back to them.

Thanks, everyone; that's just the stuff I needed to hear.

14  DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Factory "Recertified" drives? on: May 03, 2006, 03:33:34 PM
For obvious storage volume and backup reasons, I need some new drives.  I only have one right now (with DVD backups), but am about to invest in at least two more.  However, I really don't have much money to spend, so I've been attracted not only to special rebates but also discounted "recertified" external hard drives (from Western Digital's website).  Though not the latest models, they're good deals.  I'm rather tempted, but approaching with caution.  Does anyone have any advice/cautions about these drives?  Should recertified drives be avoided at all costs, or lovingly embraced?  The recertified drive would likely be a backup drive.

Go for it, Scott; sounds great.  Thanks so much for all the hard work you're doing; when should we be looking for the 2.0 release?
