1  DAM Stuff / Migration Issues / Disk Packs on: November 15, 2010, 02:13:01 PM
I've recently updated my 4 bay Drobo with a new set of 4x 2TB hard drives.
As suggested by the Drobo people I'm keeping the old set of 4 smaller hard drives (3x 1TB and 1x 500GB) together as a disk pack.
I already have all of the data from this pack backed up incrementally in single internal hard drives.

Now it's unclear to me what I should do with this older set of 4 hard drives and how they fit into my DAM plan?
Should they remain untouched and get validated and replaced every few years and remain as an RAID protected portion of my growing image archive?

In fact I have no idea what the consequences would be of me copying the data off these 4 drives separately would be since my understanding of RAID falls short in this situation.
I'm guessing the only way to correctly validate and update these drives is to put them back into a Drobo enclosure and copy them to an additional Drobo with the new replacement disks.

Or should I recycle them and start using them as incremental secondary backups for my primary backup in my newly expanded Drobo?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Marc

Hey Peter,
I recently found that printable center labels are made for CD's and DVD's.
If there was a bright white label at the center of the disc with black type (similar to the ones that you see when you rent a DVD from Blockbuster) it would be easy to see what is on the disc through the jewel case.
I was curious if this may be for any reason bad for archival purposes?
Thanks!
Marc

I have been writing only on the center of my DVD's with DVD safe ink but since the back of my jewel cases are black its hard to see what I've written on the DVD unless I remove it from the case and risk scratching the disc.
I also write the same info on the outside of my jewel cases.
In the bigger picture this isn't a big deal but there is a chance that the disc can be separated from the jewel case.
Feedback? Experience?

Is that a faux pas?
