1  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Re: Apps that import selections? on: February 03, 2011, 01:28:45 PM
Which Lightroom plug-in is this?

I know that thePhotoGeek has a solution, see http://thephotogeek.com/client-photo-selects-lr2/

I used this solution to create a little Python program which as a result creates a "Smart collection".
2  General / General Discussion / Re: File Naming - Sequence Number on: February 03, 2011, 11:04:12 AM
File names should be unique.
When you use a sequence this is the consequence and should not be bothering you.

Like in databases the primary key should have no information, but just to unique find a record. It should not store significant information.
3  General / GPS/ Geotagging / Re: Reverse-engineering GPS coordinates? on: October 16, 2010, 09:34:10 AM
Hi,

I can also recommend GeoSetter.
I have been using it now for several years. I works great manually and automatically based on GPS tracks.

Have you thought about IdImager? Rich featured, dedicated for DAM.
5  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Re: Backup Recommendations on: September 08, 2010, 10:10:29 AM
You make profiles for different backup jobs.
For each profile you tell the program what is the source directory and what is the destination directory.

I will compare both.
On a special tab you can tell Syncback what to do if:
1) the same file is different on source and destination
2) the file is in source and NOT in destination
3) the file is NOT in source but it is in destination
For each situation it has several options.

I also have a offline backup. When I attach it and start the SyncBack profile, it will sync both directories according to your settings.

Try the freeware version.

I've been using SyncBack, the freeware edition to sync multiple backup disks.

It compares the source and destination drive and you can specify how the sync is to be made.
It also has the option to make a verified copy.

The comparing can be made via the platform metadata (date and time, size etc of files) or a complete compare.

For me this works very and I'm satisfied.

Hi,

I never used it but came across this plug-in: http://www.beardsworth.co.uk/2010/06/toolbo/
Probably it is your answer for the copying of information between photo's.
8  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Re: Open Source Cataloging Program on: March 17, 2010, 11:49:56 AM
Since you are running under Windows, why not give IdiImager a try.
I know it is not Open Source, but using a good program saves a lot of time!

Also take in account how big the effort is of migration from Expression Media to the new tool and much infomation can be imported.

For IdiImager other users have walked the path already: http://wiki.idimager.com/index.php?title=How_to_Migrate_from_iView/Expression_Media_to_IDimager

Hi,

I'm using GeoSetter. This program, like others, get the location info from GeoNames.org.

10  DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Buying a hard disk? Read this ... on: February 09, 2010, 10:55:01 AM
You don't have to be a geek. Just look at the websites of the hard disk manufactures.

Western Digital
There a several enterprise SATA hard disks that have a higher MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) than the desktop hard disks (not even mentioned). And SATA is most used in PC and in enclosures.
The difference is also seen in the years of warranty. The WD RE4 has 5 years and the Caviar 3 years.
For example the WD RE4 has 1.2 million hours MTBF.

Seagate
The same for Seagate: Barracudaź Hard Drives versus Barracudaź ES.2. These have a MTBF of 0.75 million hours versus 1.2 M hrs. MTBF. Both have a SATA interface.

Samsung
Desktop class SpinPoint F1: 3 years warranty and F3 only 2 years. Enterprise class: Spinpoint F1 RAID Class has MTBF of 1,200,000. This is also a SATA drive.

My point is that most hard disk manufactures differentiate between desktop class and enterprise class. Also that each company has several enterprise class hard disks with the SATA interface.
So when you can choose, compare the specs and the prices.
The price difference will mostly not be more than the cost of 1 hour extra work.

When considering buying a new hard disk, read this paper.
This document contains very good information about the difference between a enterprise-class versus desktop class Hard Drives.

12  General / dpBestflow.org Discussions / "Use a card reader and not the camera for downloading image files ..." ??? on: January 16, 2010, 06:12:28 AM
On the Ingestion page it is stated "Use a card reader and not the camera for downloading image files unless you are shooting tethered".

What is the advantage of using a card reader, except for speed?
Is it more secure?

Somehow I have the feeling that inserting and ejecting the card in my camera in the long run will wear out the contacts??

At this moment I use the default program from Canon to ingest. With SyncBack I make a verified copy to the backup device.
Then I add GPS information with GeoSetter. Lastly I import my photo's into Lightroom where I rename etc. At this point I will also rename the backup files.
If I forget, then the next time I run SyncBack it will show the simulation page before executing the backup.
13  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Keep DVD copy of archive up to date when not using a bucket system on: November 23, 2009, 12:08:50 PM
When reading the page http://www.dpbestflow.org/file-management/file-management-overview I see different archive directory structures: data-based, client based and size based (buckets).
On page http://www.dpbestflow.org/node/292 in figure 2 the structure is job or project based.

I want to have a backup of my archive on DVD  (Blu-Ray) with the "Derivative files" and "Delivery files" included in this backup.

For originals this is no problem. Also I could wait before making the DVD copy until I have made the first "Derivative files" and "Delivery files".
However as "Derivative files" and "Delivery files" are made over time upon request, these would be added to the archive after the copy to the DVD has been made.

I know that the bucket system would solve this problem. And I do think the bucket system is a good system!
Yet this would involve restructuring my current archive directory structure. Before doing that I would like to know if there is another way to copy these newer image files to DVD.
And I know these files could be anywhere in the archive structure.

Who has a solution for this apart from the bucket system.

Hi,

I use SyncBack. There is a freeware edition.
Be sure to check the "Verify" option on one of the tabs.
15  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Re: Lightroom Duplicate naming on: October 29, 2009, 12:16:33 PM
Hi,

As you probably know, Lightroom uses a SQLite database. If you speak SQL this can be done easely.
The following script will do the job.

Code:
select AgLibraryRootFolder.absolutePath || AgLibraryFolder.pathFromRoot ||AgLibraryFile.idx_filename FilePath
from AgLibraryFile,
AgLibraryFolder,
AgLibraryRootFolder
where AgLibraryFile.folder = AgLibraryFolder.id_local
and AgLibraryFolder.rootFolder = AgLibraryRootFolder.id_local
and upper(idx_filename) in
(
select upper(idx_filename)
from AgLibraryFile
group by upper(idx_filename)
having count(upper(idx_filename)) > 1
)
order by FilePath

You will need a SQL editor like SQLiteman http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqliteman/files/ or other. Just Google.

I hope this helps Wink
