1  DAM Stuff / Software Discussions / Re: ImageIngester Pro not applying Catalog Sets and getting stuck on initial backup on: January 18, 2012, 05:03:31 AM
I recently had the same problem with II hanging during the initial backup phase. I resolved it by clearing the log file and it's worked fine ever since.

PS  I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 too.

In terms of John Beardsworth's "serial monogamy" analogy...

I can stay married to the same DAM software I know and love, but her parents have remarried to more appealing partners.  Wink

3  General / General Discussion / Guide to Asset Management video from The Luminous Landscape on: June 19, 2009, 02:30:08 AM
The Luminous Landscape has posted a couple of teasers for an upcoming video, provocatively titled "Where The #%*! Are My Pictures?" ...

I think I'll stick with the much simpler file naming conventions in "The DAM Book" and do the rest with metadata. ;-)

4  Software Discussions / ImageIngester and ImageVerifier / Re: Image Ingester 3 manual (pdf) doesn't load on: March 20, 2009, 12:35:58 PM
Robert,

I clicked the link in your post and it worked just fine for me; the II3 manual opened in a browser window and from there I can save it.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.6, Safari 3.2.1, Adobe Reader 8.1.3. What OS and apps are you using?

Maybe having two periods in the filename causes a problem on Windows systems?

kind regards,
Robert G

PS  Keep trying. I've been downloading with ImageIngester exclusively since June 2006.  Smiley
5  Software Discussions / ImageIngester and ImageVerifier / IIP 3.1.03 creates superfluous /TemplateFolder at root level on: July 04, 2008, 09:30:25 PM
Marc,

As I was preparing to backup up my system today I noticed a new root level folder called /TemplateFolder (containing a single file, ImageIngester-IPTC.xmp) that had been created when I executed IIP 3.1.03 for the first time yesterday. I renamed the folder then executed IIP 3.1.03 again and sure enough /TemplateFolder reappeared!

I already have the exact same ImageIngester-IPTC.xmp installed in ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Metadata Templates/ so I'm not sure why creating the /TemplateFolder is even necessary?

Another bug fix for 3.1.04?  Wink

Marc,

I've just tested IIP 3.1.03 on two different Macs and found the 'Auto Ingest' checkbox and the 'Eject' button don't work at all, even when ingesting from a single card.

Both functions worked OK in 3.0.02 (the last beta I tested), so it's probably related to the changes required to handle multiple cards.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

To answer my own question ... Yes, I'm missing something.

When I used a SanDisk USB card reader instead of a Lexar Firewire card reader both the 'Auto Eject' and 'Eject' functions worked OK. Then when I tried the Lexar Firewire reader again it worked fine too.  Huh

There's still potential for confusion though if you press the 'Cards...' button but don't actually follow through with ingestion.

At one stage I had a card mounted in the USB reader -- shown on the desktop (as EOS_DIGITAL) and also in the Ingestion Monitor when you press 'Cards...' -- but the main IIP window showed "No image card mounted".

On another occasion I pressed 'Cards...' followed by 'Eject'; the card was unmounted from the Firewire reader correctly but the main IIP window still showed "Mounted: EOS_DIGITAL {OXSEMI FWIRE CF READER}".

Time for dinner, then some more testing ...  Wink

Thanks Marc,

Problem solved. Bridge now launches correctly again. :-)

I've made another attempt to solve this problem by changing completely the way I launch the viewer. Try version 2.4.02, just uploaded the other day.

--Marc

Not all good news I'm afraid, Marc. Whatever you changed in v2.4.02 doesn't work for me. :-(

I have the Apps/Viewer preference set to '/Applications/Adobe Bridge CS3/Bridge CS3.app' with 'Pass in folder' checked, but the viewer never launches (although the log file says it does).

If I revert to v2.3.04 with the same preference set then the viewer always launches correctly, so it seems something is amiss with the latest version, at least on Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Robert

PS  I've tried 2.4.02 without 'Pass in folder' checked too but the viewer still doesn't launch.
10  General / General Discussion / Re: Mark Hamburg leaves Adobe ... on: May 02, 2008, 07:58:51 PM
Peter,

Thanks for your clarification of Mark's background at Adobe.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that anything you said in Melbourne was in any way related to Mark moving to Microsoft. I just thought it was an interesting coincidence and it might be significant in terms of Lightroom's future direction.

11  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Microsoft releases Expression Media 2, Pro Photo Tools on: May 01, 2008, 05:03:17 PM
News just in from Rob Galbraith ...

Quote
Microsoft has today released Expression Media 2 for Mac and Windows, an update of the program formerly known as iView MediaPro, as well as a metadata editing and geotagging application called Pro Photo Tools for Windows.

New in Expression Media 2 is the ability to edit and view a shared catalog simultaneously (one person can edit and multiple people can view) plus faster, more goof-proof photo importing. The English version of the software is available as a 30-day trial download for both Mac and Windows now, and it will be available for purchase before the end of May 2008. Expression Media 2 will be US$199, or US$99 as an upgrade from Expression Media 1.x or from iView MediaPro v3.x. Upgrades from MediaPro v3.x to Expression Media 1.x remain free until June 30, 2008. Upgrades from Expression Media v1.x to Expression Media 2 are free to those who purchased v1.x on or after February 24, 2008.

Pro Photo Tools for Windows enables the adding and editing of GPS and other metadata to photos, included certain RAW formats. It's a free download for 32-bit versions of XP and Vista. See the Microsoft article Geotagging Goes Mainstream and the C/Net article Microsoft hopes new photo tool will boost Windows for more information.

Peter,

It was good to see you again too and learn the latest DAM stuff.

I guess your comment about Mark's goal for Lightroom ("to kill Photoshop") takes on new significance now.

best regards,
Robert

While Mark’s departure does leave a gap, Lightroom’s future looks set to continue when development gears up for work on version 3.0. As for what Mark is going to do next, it is known that he is now going to Microsoft in Seattle, and that his future work there won’t involve digital imaging, but instead be focussed on the “user experience”.

Yes, you can define a macro in 'IPTC Fields > Status  > Title'

e.g.  {@filenameNew}.{@extension}

15  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: iView 8.3 filename problem with Quicktime 7.4 on: March 17, 2008, 02:22:38 PM

Its odd that when I run the check for the latest Quicktime updates in 7.3.1 is says I have the latest version.  It is 7.3.1 according to the help - about quicktime pull down.  It did ask me if I wanted to upgrade rignt after I installed it however, which I did not.

Perhaps you should accept the upgrade ...

In my experience, the latest version of QuickTime 7.4.1 does work correctly with iView 3.1.3 (as I mentioned in an earlier post on 28 February).

The filename problems mentioned by other posters may only apply to an earlier release of Quicktime 7.4.
