DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / ChronoSync and Bare Metal Recovery
|
on: July 01, 2010, 02:26:20 PM

I know that ChronoSync can create a bootable image, but can this image be used for full bare metal recovery, in the manner of SuperDuper? If not, what would be required to perform a full system restore? Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not a Mac user and I'm looking at ChronoSync as a backup solution for someone else.
Thanks.

I suspect the issue is with the configuration of Chronosync. I am not familiar with Chronosync, but my understanding is that it can be used for backup (unidirectional) or synchronization (bidirectional). Make sure you are set up for unidirectional copying only, or use a backup program that cannot delete files from the backup source.

In a similar vein, but just a tad different. I've given up on iVew and just use LR, trying EM v1 with no real success. However just acquired EM v2 (thanks PhaseOne). I want ot tidy up my keywords and metadata. Is it easier to move people and places etc to the correct field in EM2 or LR2? then remove the keyword. Also JB how do you manage keywords that are not hierarchical? Once your non-hierarchical list is in Lightroom you can create a hierarchy by moving keywords under other keywords.

I think we have a mis-communication here. I was trying to verify that the new defaults are the same as your recommendations. I have no desire to change them if they are correct.
Thanks.

Peter,
In my opinion, most photography books have a lot of filler and a little bit of real content In many cases, like other technical books, they are written because the publisher feels they need to fill a niche. This is obviously not the case with The DAM Book. It is absolutely one of the best photography or technical books I have read! Your book not only increased my knowledge of digital asset management and work flow, it changed the way I view and now approach these topics. You not only understand the concept of a system and how all the parts and pieces fit together, you are able to convey that understanding to your readers. As an author of several technical books myself I understand what a challenge this is.
Thank you very much for writing this.
Patrick
PS: I am not in the habit of writing fan mail, but I am now officially a fan of your work!

Actually, I was referring to the Import tab. Mine is different from what you describe and from the screen shot in Martin Evening's Lightroom 2 book. Instead of "Image Conversion Method" I have "Compatibility" and I don't have a check box for "Compressed (lossless)." Could this be a difference between the Mac and PC versions?
Thanks.

On Page 331 Peter suggests some default Lightroom settings. Unless I'm missing something, the Preferences dialog, especially the Import tab, is completely different in 2.5. What settings are equivalent and where do I set them?
Thanks.
