1  General / General Discussion / Re: Canon 5D MKII focus issues on: May 08, 2009, 11:47:43 PM
No focussing issues on mine.

If it's focussing badly on every lens it's worth sending it back to Canon for a service that _is_ what your warrenty is for.

Hi Peter Thanks for the reply. I'll try the export command on my next batch of images...

I'm currently working with Canon 20D CR2s if that helps any.

Thanks again

David

Hey Jay, Thanks for the reply.

Thats what I did, but if I did the dng conversion outside of lightroom the stars didn't get added to the DNGs... Which is the problem because I'm not seeing how to tell lightroom to place the newly created DNGs in a new folder.

Thanks again

David.
4  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Star Ratings in Lightroom on: September 21, 2007, 12:33:16 PM
Am I being stupid? I've just moved to a new system and I'm using the demo of lightroom to see if i want to buy it or photoshop CS3. At the moment I'm fine up until i want to convert my CR2s to DNGs.

As with my old bridge workflow I'm doing this with Adobe DNG Convertor but it appears my star ratings aren't getting synced to the file. So when I bring the images into IVMP3 I've lost my star ratings. How do I get the star ratings to sync? The develop settings are going through to the DNG but not the stars.... I'm confused.

I'm just doing a DNG convert in lightroom to see if the stars go then but I can't see a way of sending the resulting DNGs to a new folder either :-( (OK it looks like doing it in lightroom takes the star ratings, at least in Lighroom... and it would seem in ivmp3 too)

So guys am i missing something or am i just gonna have to change my workflow a bit to suit lightroom?

Thanks as always

David.

I've just joined the mac brigade buying a macbook pro a few weeks ago. I think you are pretty safe with MBPs at the moment the Mac Pro is due a refresh soon though.

Hey Guys thanks for the replies. And apologies for the delay in coming back to you. It would appear each time i tried to come back the maintenance was going on.

Both units have the option for extra power (either from another USB or an external power pack) and even with that plugged in I couldn't get the drives to mount.

I've ordered a new caddy from scan.co.uk which is an ICYBox model so hopefully that will work.

Hi  Marc,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah my old system was windows so I'm currently getting used to the mac...

To begin with all drives were NTFS... I formated one to FAT to try and got no luck then borrowed a friends firewire caddy and it worked so I'm assuming it is the caddies.

As I've got 3 laptop hardrives now I don't want to have to go out and buy another one just to get a case so I'm kinda hoping for some bare caddy suggestions.

8  DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / 2.5" OTG Caddies. MAC COMPATABLE on: September 03, 2007, 08:35:13 AM
Well my trusty laptop died last week so I went and brought a brand new MBP. All is well and goof and I'm getting used to it but and its a big BUT neither of my USB hard drive caddies work with it. One is a THECUS Yes Nano and the other is a Venus OTG 25.

Both show up in USB Prober but neither mount and show in disk utilities. The guru's in the mac shop couldn't figure it out either.

So what I'm after is a nice slimline caddy which can be my "goes with me everywhere" external drive and one slimline caddy with OTG capabilities so i can backup my photos to it in the field straight from my card reader.

As a newbie to the mac fold I'd be interested in getting some recommendations for some good kit. Both my current units say they are mac compatable but refuse to work so I'm a bit wary at just taking a shops word for it.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions

David.
9  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Re: Anyone using a UPS? on: July 23, 2007, 03:15:10 AM
Hey Daniel.

The whole point of UPS is that they give you the time to shut down your systems (PC, NAS, etc) safely during a power outage.

My NAS and my UPS communicate so that if/when I lose power the UPS first warns the NAS that its on batteries, if after a set amount of time (or a set amount of battery life remains) power hasn't been restored the NAS shuts itself down automatically. I don't have to do anything.

I think most UPS you buy come with the software to enable this. You just plug the UPS into the main system its protecting via USB.

Putting a UPS on every single device you own would be expensive but don't write them off because you think they are only useful if you're around when the power goes.

Ah ok. I get my images to how i want them to look before the dng conversion and before i put them in my final catalog so i can just do a straight extraction of a jpg when i need one.

Plus i don't submit to agencies so guess i'm not much help.
11  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: preparing images for libraries - relative newbie with procedure query on: June 29, 2007, 07:26:58 AM
Why can't you use iview's image conversion to create your full size jpgs?

Myself and Stu were banging our heads with this for ages. We then decided to just inc. the extensions we wanted to use...

It was very strange cos i'd never seen them before and we use pretty much the same kit. We got it sorted but thanks for the replies.
13  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: Speed of response in iView and Expression Media on: June 26, 2007, 02:51:15 AM
Mark. I'm surprised you didn't find anything about this. It is most peoples major compaint when it comes to ivmp3 and xM. I use a NAS to store all my photos and its actually impossible to work with them live. I do all my work with it offline and then let ivmp3 sync over night.

If Microsoft knew this was a major bug (as it is) when they brought ivmp3 it should have been number one on the hitlist and been tackled for version 1. They are trying to sell this program to professionals and more and more of those have some sort of network array. To realise a crippled version as version 1 is so stupid. you'd think they would have learnt from Apples aperture mistakes.

14  Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Revisiting the ratings pyramid on: June 25, 2007, 01:48:34 AM
At the moment I'm only using 0, *, and  ** for my ratings. Images I like get *'d and then ACR'd. The post edit selects (normally up to 12 per band) get **. So on average thats me at 1 in 10. ~ 10 ** our of a 100 ish images.

However I'm now thinking that certain shots are standout shots more than just ** so will be going back through the ** and picking out some to be rated ***.

Chris replied superbly before I could.

Thanks for taking the time to rephrase Chris.

Daniel does that make more sense?
