DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Advice on 1st DVD archive

not sure if this helps, since I only shoot jpgs, but you could look into a free program that you can download online called imageburn, & it has a setting in it that has verification, it runs through a disc with the items you want to burn, then if everything is ok, it burns your files to the disc, it also lets you choose file sytems for the most compatable disc & a name for your disc.

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Blu-Ray burner on sale - $219

I went with Taiyo Yuden DVD-R since I read that Pioneer was one of the 1st to develop the DVD-R, & my current DVD burner is a Pioneer, so I thought I would get the best & most compatible burns with these discs & burner. Also they are a bit cheaper & since I will probably switch to Blue Ray discs in the future, I do not see any reason to pay too much, but just enough to get good quality. Sossity

thanks.
I've been looking, and can't seem to find information about the archival life of the DVDs. Which brings up two questions.
When people are burning DVDs, are most people using archival quality DVDs? And are there archival Blu_Ray DVDs that are being used?
As always, thanx for the 411.

I found a helpful website; www.digitalfaq.com, & there are some articles on the left side of the page, & there is one about a blank media guide, that has a run down of different classes of media. You could even sign up as a member & post in their forum, most of the people are very knowledgeable. Another good site is www.cdfreaks.com, which also has a good forum where people discuss all this sort of thing. Sossity

DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: ALERT - Seagate Firmware Problem - Data at Risk

Sossity, I suggest you contact Seagate directly. Peter
I just called seagate support & they checked for me & told me my drive was not affected, I also asked them to e-mail links to check for myself & for a seagate tools check disk program. so hopefully it should be OK, I am glad I came across this thread, I would not have known to check. Thanks to the starter of this thread for bridging it to our attention. Sossity

Yep, good advice. I made sure my two backups were up to date, then followed Seagate's instructions for updating the firmware on my officially affected 1TB drive (model ST31000340AS, with a listed serial number). The update went without problem, and the new firmware is reported as expected. So at least I didn't encounter the updating problems that some of the early updaters did.
I cant seem to get the serial number in to check if mine is affected, I have the same model you do, but when I input the serial number, I get a message saying the serial number is entered incorrectly. I bought this drive in Oct 2008, as an OEM in a sealed bag, did not come in a box, & before I put it into its external enclosure, I wrote down the serial number. Sossity

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see the Seagate link where you can check your model and serial numbers and download the firmware. Here it is: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/news.jsp?DocId=207931I just discovered that two of my internal drives are affected. I'm preparing to update the firmware on my Mac Pro. Yikes. - Jim eta: I just successfully ran the firmware updates on both of my affected drives. They both now show firmware revision: SD1A. So this should solve the problem right? I went to this page & entered my serial number for the drive that I copied before putting it into the external closure, but I keep getting error messages saying I did not enter the number correctly, & there does not seem to be anywhere where I can actually download the firmware upgrade my drive is one I bought in Oct 2008, it is the ST31000340AS 1 TB barracuda, I bought it as on OEM, it did not come in a box, just a sealed package. I have put it into an external enclosure & use it as an external hard drive. Sossity

I am going to watermark a copyright to some photos; & would like to know;
I do some editing to a photo in photoshop, like color correction etc, to a photo someone else took, do I make the watermark copyright in their name? or mine since I did the editing? or does it matter?
what copyright year do I use on a photo that I have done some editing to; ie a photo I took in 2004, but am now in 2009 doing some editng? which year would I use?

General / Photo Blogs / my new photo blog
|
on: January 25, 2009, 03:39:47 PM
|
I have just begun my new photo blog, I have my artwork blog, but as people saw some of my photos they suggested I post my photos online as well; it is www.ravenfineartsphotography.blogspot.com, there are only a few up right now, as I am learning how to put images & a blog up online. I recently posted about candid portraits of people & children I have taken in public places, but based on some of the replies, I feel it may be best not post those right now until I get clearer answers about it. I still have the link for it on my blog, but there are no photos of portraits right now. I set it up to be similar to a website where one can click on the images that take one to a gallery of more similar images.Comments are welcome Sossity

General / General Discussion / is it legal placing photos I took of people on my blog or my website
|
on: January 22, 2009, 02:22:45 AM
|
I have been enjoying taking various photos, among which I have some photos of people & children I took, & they seem to come out fairly well, although I am not an expert or pro. Recently I have opened a new blog or a photo blog on blogger.com, www.ravenfineartsphotography.blogspot.com, I have just started to construct it so all I have is sunsets at the moment, it is a branch out of my art blog; ravenfinearts.blogspot.com. I am new to putting my material online so my blogs are a little rough. I dont know about website design right now, so I used blogger to get my material online for exposure & set them up like websites. But I wanted to check & see if anyone on here knew whether it would be safe/legal to post my portraits of people & children on the portraits section of my photo blog, before I start posting my photo portraits in my portraits section. Or if someone does not know here where I could find this out. If I need any kind of release this would be difficult as I do not know some of the people & kids I photographed, would be hard to track them down. Sossity

General / General Discussion / processing my duplicated camera original jps with watermarks
|
on: December 23, 2008, 01:25:30 AM
|
|
I am using some watermarking software (called Visual Watermark) to watermark some of my camera original jpgs from my camera, before I process these with the watermarks there are options to resize & or convert format, I do not opt for these, but keep original format, among options for keeping original format is a scale for image quality set at 80% but I put it at 100% to preserve orginal quality. Do I lose quality /or do these images get compressed even though I did not choose to resize or change image format?
before I do any water marking I make copies of my camera originals & put/paste these copies in a to be batch processed folder in my derivative directory, so my "camera originals" remain untouched.

Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Adobe photoshop & bridge to do my downloading & digital asset mangement
|
on: December 16, 2008, 03:48:00 AM
|
|
Does Adobe photoshop Elements or the full version with bridge download photos, do lossless rotation of jpgs, add meta data, rate & rename photos? I notice sections in the DAM book with photos showing digital asset management in photoshops bridge. Wouldn't it be more economical to get a full version of photoshop of which I can not only edit my photos but also do my digital asset management, as from what I can see in the DAM book, it seems bridge can do alot of what iview media pro 3 & expression media can do, why get 2 separate softwares, one for the management & photoshop for editing, when it seems photoshop can do both? can it do digital asset management as well as the dedicated software of iview & expression media?

General / General Discussion / Adobe RGB vs Pro Photo RGB color spaces & newer printers
|
on: November 16, 2008, 02:20:30 AM
|
|
I just read in the latest issue of shutterbug mag, or one of the writers thinks the Adobe RGB color space will be obsolete soon & the newer future printers will print up photos in this color space will look dull & over sharpened. That Pro photo RGB will become a newer better standard for printing, & will make photos archived or all the RAW images archived will be in an obsolete format. Does anyone think this is true? I notice alot of DSLRs come with Adobe RGB & sRGB settings, even the new ones coming out now, What will this mean for all photographers out there with there photos in the 2 color spaces; sRGB & Adobe RGB? will this make all my photos I have carefully cataloged obsolete & unprintable? not to mention some slides I have just scanned.
