47  Software Discussions / ImageIngester and ImageVerifier / Image Ingerster version 3 on i7 macbook pro loading SDHC card very slowly on: November 08, 2010, 03:55:40 PM
I am trying the trial version of image ingester  the newest version 3 on my macbook pro 2010 i7 running mac os snowleopard 10.6.3.

I wanted to review the thumb files of the card content because I often want to pick out the files to download. I pressed thumbs to view the files, there are about 100-400+ images & some video files on the class 4 SDHC SD memory card. When I tried to open the thumb views, the progress window opened but it seemed to lock my laptop, I got "the spinning beachball" that people refer to when a mac hangs up. It seemed like it was stuck before even started, if the progress was going to happen, it would take hours.

I tried loading & previewing this same memory card with mac os x's native image capture, & it opened up the files without this trouble, even expression media can load content off it.

I contacted Marc Rochkind, & he replied that there maybe a problem with the memory card or my computer system. He said that that amount of images should not be causing this hangup. But if there was a system or card problem, why is image capture able to open up & view the card content? when slip the card into the mac's sd slot, it is recognized.

On a side note, about a week ago, I had this memory card in my camera & while taking a photo, all of a sudden the camera freezes, after pressing the shutter button, the screen went blank, I tried to power down the camera but I could not get it to respond, it was stuck with the lens out. So I left it on & put it away in my bag as I had to be somewhere & did not have time to fool with it. When I got back to my car, the camera lens had retracted back into the body.

I asked about this in another forum, & was told the battery was the problem, & it was drained. I thought I had just charged it, but I was told the battery meter on my camera was not accurate. So I recharged my camera battery, & have used it again, & so far so good.

I am telling about this incident because, I wonder if the memory card might be faulty, & possibly why image ingester is having a problem with it.

I now remember asking someone about this, & they said it would not be good because it uses quicktime compression. But I thought if it can add metadata to photos & it has the option to download, I cannot see why it would not be any good for downloading original content, it is file transfers.

bumping thread, nobody has heard of Downloader pro? image ingester seems to have too many things going on.

I discovered this quite a while back, I think maybe the only way after downloading the files may be to make some kind of sidecar files? there is a thread about DAM for video files on here, you could try searching for it.

can I use this program to download my original photo & video files? would it be able to download DSLR files?

I have recently switched to a mac, & I already had the expression media 1.0 mac version & installed it. since it is DAM software, is there any reason I could not just use it, instead of buying another DAM program to download my files?

52  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / Re: DAM for video files? on: October 10, 2010, 02:21:44 AM
I have just treated my video files like the image files, with keywords etc, on a PC with downloader pro. I give them the same file naming structure that I do photos; My name_YYMMDD_file number from camera_CO (for "camera original") this way I can detect originals from converted variations of a video file. The meta data does not stick to the original movie files, but it saves it to the side car files.

I have used a Sony still camera that shoots .mpg movie files, & now a Panasonic that I can choose either the MTS format or .mov, I use .mov as it is more compatible.

the .mpg movie files created .thm files that had the information. The .mov movie files from my Panasonic still camera saves a little jpg file alongside each movie file & I think the metadata gets stored in those.

when I have say some photos & movies from 10-02-2010, I will make a folder for this content, & subfolders, movies, for the video files, & photos for all the photographs.

ex; a photo shot on 10-2-2010; Sossity_101002_1250_CO.jpg

a video file shot on 10-2-2010; Sossity_101002_1251_CO.mov, the thumb or sidecar file would get the same name; Sossity_101002_1251_CO.thm

1250 & 1251 would be the individual file number the camera assigns, & helps to identify individual photos & video files.

the way I can preserve the video files is to make sure they have the _CO at the end of them like for my .jpegs, to prevent overwrites.

hope this helps, this is the best way I have tried to manage these files for now, I wish there was something for video as well.

53  Software Discussions / Choosing Software/Other DAM Applications / mac equivalent of Downloader Pro on: October 10, 2010, 01:57:50 AM
I have recently bought a mac laptop, and I have been using Downloader Pro for a while on a PC, & it has worked well for me so far unfortuneately it is PC only, I have looked at imageingester pro, but it seems a little complicated, I watched Peter's demo of it.

Right now, I do not have specific clients, I mostly just take photos for myself, for recreation, & for art reference, & manage some of the content or photos & video content my family shoots. I may get clients later on if I go into photography as a pro, but not just now. Although, I would like the software to be able to grow with me if I do get into photography more. Another thing, when I download my photos, & video files, I like to be able to view the content on my memory cards, & download content based on what keywords I would give to certain photo & video files. This way, if I had more photos with those keywords, they would already be filled out.

My workflow so far has been;

1. Import content of camera card

2. view the content, & create folders on my external hard drive for them to be downloaded to; for example, I would see that my memory card has photos from 10-9-2010 of a day at the harbor, so I would select these & set downloader pro in file>preferences to download them to this directory on my external hard drive; H\Raw_055\2010_10_09_Harbor days. Under downloader pros preferences.

3. In file> preferences, I would assign the file name structure, my name_YYMMDD_filename_CO

4. Then I would go edit> to the IPTC/XMP data area & fill in some basic metadata, for caption;  author, copyright, then some keywords, a category, then origin; location, city, state & country.

5. After I am satisfied with the info I typed in, I would have downloader pro download those selected images from 10-9-2010 to my external hard drive; H\Raw_055\2010_10_09_Harbor days.

6. I would then close up downloader pro, open these images in expression media & rotate any images that were not done automatically in downloader pro, & give ratings to the images, & correct any of the meta data I entered previously.

7. After a Raw "bucket" or in this case after Raw_055 reaches about the 4.30 GB size, I start a new one; Raw_056 & back up Raw_055 to a blank DVD.

54  DAM Stuff / Naming Issues / number reset option in my camera settings on: August 09, 2010, 03:18:22 AM
I recently got a new camera, among its options is to reset or not reset the picture file numbers, do I leave it to yes or no? should I just leave it alone & let the camera figure out the numbers?
55  General / General Discussion / Help! Common Punctuations for song titles ripped from albums & file naming rules on: February 10, 2010, 02:35:40 AM
Happy New Year, everyone.

I am in the process of ripping my Cds to .Flac & .mp3 formats. I know this DAM stuff is mainly for photography, but if anyone could give some input it would be nice, & save me alot of time, as I am ripping hundreds of CD's, & I do not want to have to keep going over info from them.

In the DAM Book, it states file names, should only contain dashes & underscores, & extensions should only be 3 letters long. Does all this really apply to individual song file names ripped from an album? or is it mostly for image files? I am finding it hard to apply, there is the usual punctuation; like commas, accent marks, periods & various brackets symbols; ie; [ ] & ( ).

In addition the 3 letter extension rule, it does not really seem to work either for one of the formats I am ripping in; .flac which stands for a non lossy format for audio files; Free Lossless Audio Codec. It seems to rip & show in windows with 4 letters.

56  DAM Stuff / Software Discussions / Re: software that can modify timestamps/creation dates for derivitive files on: November 17, 2009, 01:57:15 AM
I think the link for the program that rod provided may have worked, I loaded the photos & changed the timestamps on them. I then reloaded them from my drive in itunes & they appeared in order. I think itunes arranges photos on download order, I synced the logo first & then my photos & this seemed to work.

57  DAM Stuff / Software Discussions / software that can modify timestamps/creation dates for derivitive files on: November 09, 2009, 03:10:09 AM
I am trying to get photos on my ipod touch to sort in the order I want & I read that they get arranged by the time stamps, a lot of the images I am working with are not original photos but derivatives, that were either scanned, or altered photographs. I discovered that expression media only adjusts timestamps creation dates for camera originals/photos taken directly with a camera.

does anyone know of software (preferably free) or a way that I can set the timestamps for these derivatives?

58  DAM Stuff / Software Discussions / copyright symbol on a mac with windows only software on: September 23, 2009, 03:28:45 AM
I may be getting a mac later this year, & will probably be getting parallels to run windows for some of my windows only programs. Among these windows only programs that I have really come to like is Downloader Pro, I thought about it, & I could run this program under parallels, or boot camp, but I realized that I often input the copyright symbol onto my images in the IPTC data fields before downloading, &  I did this with my windows keyboard. I don't know if I will be able to input the copyright symbol on this program running through windows on a mac, I have learned the keyboard is different on a mac.

I looked online about mac versions of Downloader pro & someone posted in another frum that image ingester pro could be set up like downloader pro, can this be done? & how? I have sampled image ingester pro & found it a bit confusing & complicated, so I discovered downloader pro & like its straight forward interface.

I like to do as much of my DAM & meta data to my images in one shot of which downloader pro had; rename, keywords, copyright, author, origin; country, country code etc; state. location, category & so on. The only things I had to go to expression media for was; rotating my .jpgs & rating them. I like to use as few programs as possible to get my DAM work done.

does anyone know of other programs that are cross platform, under $100.00 & allow me to do most if not all of my DAM & metadata upon my 1st download?

59  General / General Discussion / shutterstock.com on: April 01, 2009, 08:15:26 PM
has anyone heard of shutterstock? I found a section where one submits their photos: http://submit.shutterstock.com/ where one is paid .25 everytime one of their photos is downloaded. Is this a good deal? would someone please look at the submit part/click the link I provided & tell me if it is worth trying or is it a scam? would I be able to use the photos I submit here to other places online? do I lose my copyrights? I have not registered my photos, I just put a little copyright watermark on them. Are there better places to go with my photos? to start? I have taken a few good photos around my town of the beaches & sunsets, & I need some income, but I am here asking for some guidance, as I know there are some experienced professional photographers on this forum.

looking to make income from my arts & photos,

60  General / General Discussion / Re: copy right for photos that I edited taken by other people on: March 30, 2009, 11:15:28 PM
their photo, their copyright. If you've made alterations and claim it your own I believe you'll be violating their copyright.
I think the date of original creation would be the year of copyright. You might try looking at www.editorialphotographers.com for a whole lot on copyright.

rod

What about when someone like a family member takes a photo of me next to my artwork, & I want a watermark before I place the photo online, is the copyright still theirs even if my artwork is in the photo?
