A day is for about 500 photos. I do not wait, I know that they are being transfered in the background while I do other things.

I am storing the raw files up there along with my catalog, they can take up to a day to upload, it all depends how much I shoot. I just find it reassuring that the files are off site quickly.

I am currently using SugarSync for an online backup solution. I have not backed up my complete set of photos only those from the previous few months. This keeps the volume down for me, although I only shoot about 20Gig a year. Using SugarSync allows me to get my photos backed up offsite as quickly as possible with out me remembering to do anythink.

Hi Neil,

As Murat suggested you should use a combination of methods. I use Blu Ray for the conenience of not having to use multiple DVDs along with a NAS drive, with Genie Timeline so I get my whole machine backed up.

The price of hard drives keep falling so if you look at a NAS drive with multiple disks make sure it has the ability to rebuild its self and if more space if available grow the partition. I currently use 2 * 1 TB drives, when I run out of space I can replace the first disc with a 2 TB drive and let the volume rebuild. When complete I can add a second 2 TB drive and once rebuilt I will have the extra space.

There is also the possibility of cloud based services but these are not cheap, but they have the advantage they are off site.

5  General / Photo Blogs / My New Blog lifeatf8 on: May 10, 2011, 02:10:09 PM
Earlier in the year I updated my web site http://www.lifeatf8.co.uk and incorporated a WordPress blog http://www.lifeatf8.co.uk/blog. The main site and galleries has been created using the Lightroom Web Engines provided by The Turning Gate, and then I have seamlessly integrated a WordPress Blog.

I have a mixture of posts on my blog, some are based around photography, others are around how I seamlessly integrated WordPress into my site and some are about how I use technology around photography.

What has surprised me is how much effort goes into maintaining a site and Blog, it was more than I bargained for but worth the effort.

Hope you enjoy it; any feedback would be gratefully received.

No problem, if you need any additional files let me know. IIP is extracting exif data from the files as they are being renamed correctly.

I just got my new 40d last night and noticed that when I view the previews they are a mess. I am on windows running beta B16, I did not try beta 17 but it does not addmit to supporting the 40d. I assume the 40d is not supported so would you like some sample images?

I have no idea why it failed the duplication test, I do know the file is corrupt as I can not view it. I do not know if that has any think to do with it. What is stranger is that the THM side car file was not duplicated. With canon CRW files I assume you extract the meta data fom the THM file.

If it is any use I can upload the file for you.

Thanks

10  General / General Discussion / Re: Mircosoft's SyncToy on: May 10, 2007, 09:05:30 AM
I have not tried Microsofts Sync Toy, but instead use Robocopy (I think it stands for robust file copy) It is a comand line tool and I manually run it, but it is very powerful and quick. I use it to backup my images.

Interestingly it is now shipped with Vista whereas in the past it was part of the Resource Kit.

The file is being copied to both the backup location and then onto the primary location. So each time I ingest the card with the corrupt files I am getting 2 more copies of the file with the 0000n postfix aded to the name. I was surprised that IIP was able to correctly name the file using the exif data (This may be being extracted from the the THM file) but then not spot it was a duplicate.

I suppose I was hoping the file would not be copied multiple times. What I will do is see if image verifier thinks the file is corrupt.

Marc,

I have just tested the latest beta in particular the check for duplicate image functionality. I have a question regarding the behaviour. Unfortunately I have a corrupt (CRW) image in the card. The image keeps getting ingested each time I run IIP. But it is being correctly named each time and I only have a single copy of the THM file ( its a Canon CRW file).

Thanks

I have just bought a portable storage device from ebay for £17 see the link below, I have also bought a 60 Gig laptop drive for £22, so for £40 I have a portable storage device which I can use whilst away from my computer to back up my photos while away. I will then be able to use IIP to ingest the cards directly from the device instead of the numerous memory cards I normally return with. I can let you know what the device is like when I receive it if anyone is interested.

I use either Samsung Spin Point drives or Seagate 7200. The external drives are placed in whatever caddy I buy at the time.
