Sorry John, I thought I had a signature set up here, obviously not.

I certainly wasn't 'having a dig' at Marc!! - I'll keep my thoughts to myself in future...

You can purchase a codec to do this here: http://www.ardfry.com/dng-codec/
Haven't tried it but it says it works with Vista & Windows 7

I expect there are others as well, this just happened to be the first hit I found on Google.

6  DAM Stuff / Hardware Discussions / Re: Windows XP in a Mac: OEM or Retail? on: July 05, 2009, 12:44:10 AM
The OEM versions are meant to be sold with a new PC (or a piece of 'hardware') - They are identical copies but the licence code is only valid for use on one machine, i.e. the one that it came with.
You will be able to reinstall it a million times on this PC, but when you come to install on another, or if you change the hardware significantly on the original, the activation will fail and you will have to ring up Microsoft and try to convince them to issue you with a new activation code.
If you tell them you have upgraded the original machine with new graphics card and hard drives for instance they will probably let you do it, but if you say you have bought a new box then they shouldn't allow it.
However, lately they have been more 'flexible' and you may get away with it.

With a retail version you just tell them you have a new PC and no problems, as the licence is transferable to another box. (only one at a time though so when they ask you how many boxes it is installed on the correct answer is ONE!)

I decided to be brave and installed the new version over the old and all is running fine, Ingested 250 odd images this evening  Smiley

At first I didn't think it had changed, looking identical to the previous version. Then I realised that I had to check the 'Small Screen' option to get the compact view which I prefer personally - Less clutter IMO

Thanks!

I have 3.2.04 so all should be ok then. Thanks for the reply Marc.

The free version of Syncback is available here.

They keep that pretty well hidden away! - Well spotted.

I don't think you can get the free version any more - just SE and Pro (I use Pro).

Possibly a dumb question, but can I install this new version separately to v3.2.04 (on the same PC) to test it out?
If so will it will pick up my existing presets?

If not, and I 'upgrade' my old version, will it pick up my presets?

Thanks
12  DAM Stuff / Naming Issues / Re: batch renamers- any thoughts? on: May 31, 2009, 01:47:45 AM
Another handy tool for this sort of thing is the free 'FastStone Image Viewer' (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm) - This will batch rename for you as well.
13  Software Discussions / RAW File Converters / Re: Capture One DNG Metatdata anomaly on: May 27, 2009, 08:27:48 AM
Thanks for the prompt reply Peter  Smiley

I did wonder about the character set or something like that - I'm only seeing it in the displayed metadata within C1 itself. In all other apps it shows fine, so this makes me think it must be a C1 issue - even on converted jpeg/tiff files it is not being 'passed-on' so is not a real issue, but it just seemed to have started with the updated version 4.8.1

I may join up on the Phase One forums and see if anyone there can explain what is going on.

Thanks again.

I have to admit this is a big minus point for me as well. I would like to use EM2 as my main database program as it is so quick (I am currently using the huge resource hog called Lightroom Smiley ) and as you say, you may as well just look through the normal 'flat' keyword list! - Maybe in the next service pack?
15  Software Discussions / RAW File Converters / Capture One DNG Metatdata anomaly on: May 27, 2009, 07:19:51 AM
Hello, first post here so be gentle  Smiley

At the moment I find myself liking Capture One 4 (not Pro) for my RAW file conversions, mainly (IMO) because of better colour accuracy.
However, I have just noticed the copyright in the basic metadata section displaying a funny symbol on all my dng files, even ones that have been created years ago:

©Kevin C******

It's the funny 'Â' character that is appearing ??

All my original CR2 files that get backed up to another location by ImageIngester are fine, although they display slightly differently (without the copyright symbol):

Copyright: Kevin C***

I have recently updated to version 4.8.1 and didn't know if anyone else had noticed this? - I have done a quick search of the C1 forums etc. but have not come across anything to explain this behaviour.  I don't know if it did it in 4.8 but I'm sure I'd have noticed.

The metadata is applied upon ingestion by II and is fine in all other applications (Bridge, PS CS4, LR 2.3 & EM2)

Note that any file converted from these DNG files shows the correct metadata in CS4 etc. so it's not being passed-on to the jpeg conversion...

Thanks for any help...
