DAM Stuff / Software Discussions / Re: Transfer ratings from jpg - dng

I just wanted to point out a few things. First I think MetaSync only works on the Mac platform and Idimager works awesome for things like this on the Windows platform. It is features like this that made me choose IDI in the first place. I hope Hert doesn't mind me metioning it, but in the next release of Idimager you will able to choose if ratings and/or color labels are automatically transfered to images in a version stack. For instance I mainly shoot sports and almost always shoot Raw/Jpg. I can then go do my ratings and they will automatically go to the Raw and JPG. It is also an option so if you don't want it to work in this manner it does not have to. I think it is a huge feature that is speeding up my workflow that will be in Hert's next release.

First of all I am no expert when it comes to Iview or Raw Shooter and second I think you are talking about viewing the CRW and not a saved JPG or Tiff. If we are talking about the CRW after your adjustments have been made I do not know of any application that will show the adjustments other than Raw Shooter. I believe Raw Shooter uses their own sidecar file that has the settings saved. That way RSP knows how to display the image, but other applications will not be able to use the data. Idimager can read some of the meta data I believe, but would not be able to interpret the adjustments. I am sorry if I am off base on this one, but I thought I would give it a try.

Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Re: Extracting Metadata overwrites XMP, Is this correct?

Did you try to Sync Annotations, rather than Extract Metadata?
Unfortunately, the only way I know of to export the info back reliably is to use DNG. Peter
I do believe I tried Sync Annotations, but I didn't expect it to do anything because I don't believe IVMP will write to anything Canon RAW Files via an XMP sidecar unless the extract metadata is used. I also understand exactly what you are saying with DNG, however Idimager and ACR seem to work fine writing to the same XMP sidecar. I guess I just feel like the same would be a reasonable solution for IVMP. I just can't jump on the DNG push because Bibble is one of my weapons, I just like to keep those ACR settings if I can when I use it. Thanks for the confirmation. John

Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / Extracting Metadata overwrites XMP, Is this correct?
|

I just want to make sure my testing is correct before I assume something, but let's say I have some Canon CR2 files which already have an XMP sidecar with ACR settings and other information such as Keywords. If I extract the Meta Data in IVMP to the same folder it will overwrite the existing XMP sidecar and my information such as keywords will be in the new XMP file since it was in the database, but information such as ACR settings will be lost. Is my thinking correct on this.
Thanks, John

Software Discussions / iView MediaPro / What is the green pencil type thing for?

I am sorry as I am sure this is extemely easy to figure out, but I have searched and read through the manual and still must be overlooking it, but what is the thing next to items in the info panel that looks like a pencil and when you click on it it turns green. I am not talking about the one for meta data templates at the top, but the one next to each item from annotations down that is next to each item. For instance if I have 10 keywords this item will be next to each keyword. Any information would be greatly appreciated and I am sorry again.

So what does your workflow and asset management look like with BibblePro near the front-end?
I use Idimager and at this point I am bringing in one image at a time and adding it to a workqueue, however if I do end up purchasing Bibble Pro I will probably write or have someonoe on the IDI forum help me write a script where I can select multiple images in IDI and send them to a Bibble Pro Workqueue. Do you use any of the IPTC functions in BibblePro? Not at this time. You avoid eor use Adobe Bridge? Pretty much for ratings only. What about sidecar management and tracking? I use XMP sidecars created by Bridge or Idimager. They seem to be functioning pretty well together at this point. Does most of your processing stop with BibblePro and you don't do much in Photoshop? A little bit of both, I was transferring into PS and doing some finishing work like sharpening and such, but my last group of prints were mostly done in just Bibble.

I take it from you comments that you believe your ACR issues are with the software itself and not your level of expertise with it. I'm trying to sanity check myself here.
Mike, That is hard to say. I do think I have a pretty good understanding of ACR and I have used it enough to get fairly good results. I just think for myself other programs give me better results in an easier manner. I think I could eventually get close to the same results or the same results with ACR, but I think it would take a lot of practice and possibly take longer than in another application such as Bibble or C1. I really, really, really think that it is personal taste for myself. Some people prefer foreign cars over domestic and some people prefer Mexican Food over Italian Food. At this point I just think I prefer Bibble Pro over ACR. I do think my problems are with ACR itself and not my expertise, but it is more of a personal thing rather than a Bibble is better thing. BTW Bibble also extended my trial for the same reason. Thanks, John

Michael,
I really can't encourage you much. All I can really say is that I am pretty much in your shoes. I read Peter's book, Fraser's book and have started Kelby's book. I think for myself it is just coming down to the fact that I don't like ACR. I really want to because of work flow and I don't have to buy something else, but it is much, much easier for myself to get consistent results that I like in Bibble Pro. I know there are some things people knock about it, but for myself it is giving me what I want easier, faster and more consistently. I read recently where someone compared RAW converters to film and much of it being personal preference. I would like to think that I can get multiple results from one RAW converter, that compare to multiple types of film, but I am starting to think that a lot of this RAW converter thing is going to come down to personal opinion and personal needs.
For instance I shoot lots of High School Sports in poor lighting. The NN addition to Bibble Pro works very nice with this. Once again sorry that I can't really help, but jus say that I understand where you are coming from. This whole journey made me glad that I didn't delete my CR2 files. I had already converted thousands of images to DNG and placed the CR2's in another folder. It took me a couple of weeks to get my CR2's back in place and in a program that could write meta data to XMP side car files. It has taught me to really think things out fully, before jumping into something.

John,
Thanks so much. I don't know why that did not work for me earlier. I may have been the way I had my thumbnail preferences in Iview set up and then I forgot to go back and try that again. It works perfect now.
Thanks again, John

John, Sorry I should have mentioned that I have already tried that. Say I open up a set of images and just want to make adjustments, but not convert to TIFF or JPG or anything. What should I do before exiting ACR for the updated previews to show up in Iview or IDI?
Thanks, John

DAM Stuff / DNG / Automatic Export Settings???

I am wanting to view my changes to DNG's in Iview or IDI and it seems the only way I can do that is to click the Export Settings button every time in ACR. Is there a better way to do this or maybe even an automatic way to have ACR update the JPG when I make changes. Since ACR knows the changes I have made I figured the preview was already updated. I am sure I am missing something here.
Thanks, John

Peter,
Thanks for another try. I had actually tried that as well and had the same results. I also am having the same issue with other things like in the Event section having "Basketball Game" appear twice. I did send a support request this afternoon. I guess I just thought Iview had a moderator that helped out in the forums like you do here and Hert does on the IDI forum. I guess you can't have everything everywhere. Thanks again for all the help.

Peter,
I would say I use a hybrid of your workflow and my own. At this point I was kind of trying to skip Bridge. I shoot RAW/JPG because of shooting Sports and I do not always having time to go immediately make corrections on hundreds of images. I have been taking images of the card and onto my computer, then running the raw through the DNG converter and then working in Iview. It seems that Bridge does not always play nicely with Iview and other applications, such as the Urgency field issue that is being discussed at the moment. Really this point in Iview would be the first time I see the images in a application that I can apply a template. I would hate to have to go through Bridge just to apply a template. Thanks for the input. Maybe I will send an email to Iview, I have tried their forums on a few issues, but no one ever responds.
