1  Software Discussions / Import From Camera / Re: Error after opening inDesign file from Bridge on: January 15, 2007, 07:11:24 PM
Has a fix ever been found for this annoyance???

Hmmm...RTFM...I know, I know!!!!
3  DAM Useful Stuff / DAMuseful Video training / Re: sending image by email on: December 28, 2006, 03:35:41 PM
Interesting...my email client is Pocomail, much better and more powerful than Outlook or Express

When I R-clk in Explorer as you suggest, I get a dialog box asking if I want to compress or leave the image. I clicked leave it alone and then OK, then nothing happens. So the problem is clearly something in Windows and not in iView. But is strange that when I click on a "mailto" link in my browser, it opens up the mail client as expected...

In this case, the host is ME! I run my own server on a separate UNIX machine at this location. I will check with my son, the UNIX guru...maybe he will see the problem (he usually does  Smiley)
5  DAM Useful Stuff / DAMuseful Video training / Re: convert images on: December 28, 2006, 03:27:44 PM
1) That is certainly different from what many of the other teachers are saying. Which means to me that it probably doesn't matter (as long as it is high quality JPG)

2)I haven't had time to test, but I always thought and again, was taught, that printing should not be done at less than 240 ppi. Thus if you just print the converted image directly, you are printing at 72, which is 'monitor-resolution' not usually for printing. Are you going to burst that bubble, too???  Undecided

Oh no...not another one...sorry

On disk A, in the convert images movie, the process is clear and no trouble...2 questions...

1) Why, if you are going to PRINT, do you convert to a JPG, rather than a TIFF or PSD (lossless)?

2) Normally in ACR, I keep the output resolution at 300, but I see now that if you don't actually SAVE, but rather choose DONE as we did, the resolution remains what it was when the images came in from the camera, which for most cameras is 72. It turns out that the converted images from iView are actually OK for printing 4x6 at 300, but they need to go through an 'image resize' in Photoshop first

Now I really feel dumb, but when I try to follow chap 12 on disc A, it appears to be working, but iView never opens my email client. I do have other programs that send email and open my email, but this doesn't work. I am using Windows XP, but don't hold that against me....

Is this (actually are these) problem(s) ones that I should be addressing to IView?
8  DAM Useful Stuff / DAMuseful Video training / ftp folder on: December 27, 2006, 04:33:55 PM
Sorry to be a bit of a pest and to sound like a computer newbie, which I really am not. I started working with computers in the early 60's!!  Undecided

When I try to do the web gallery as you show in the video, I get an error message that the directory cannot be created on the server. The files are created on the local machine correctly and I have checked the usual...ID and PW are correct. Permissions on the server are appropriate (UNIX server). I am able to ftp to the same location (with same ID) and create a folder using my standard ftp software. Is it something obvious I am missing? Is there a log kept somewhere that I can check?

Thanks
9  DAM Useful Stuff / DAMuseful Video training / Bridge Labels on: December 27, 2006, 03:47:06 PM
In the use of the colored labels in Bridge, I think I can understand 'Unrated', 'TrashMe' and 'altPick', but please explain 'OutTakes' and 'Temp'. And while you are about it, how do you place the 'Temp' label? The only way I see is do it through a menu choice since there does not seem to be a keyboard shortcut.

Thanks, but I did receive the lite and now I installed it. I went through the video again and I see how it works...Thanks..I'll keep plugging away  Grin

1. I used R&F. I noticed that in the video, both were choices on your menu, but I only have R&F. Was I supposed to install R&F Lite at some point during installation? And at this point I don't remember if I checked the box for "iView compatibility". I will go back and do it again and see how it goes.

2. All your statements on point and I see what you are saying.

3. AHA! Insight!

Happy Holidays!!

Neal,

1) I have changed the preferences in each of the programs as you suggested in prior lessons, but when I drag a folder into iView, the thumbnails show me only the stars and the filename. Your video seems to show the color label also.

Rank and File does that, or you can do it manually (select all images in iView with a particular color and apply the corresponding label.)

3) Perhaps I was confused, but looking at the chapter titles in CD #2, they are very similar to CD #1 and what is 'variable light' versus 'controlled light'?

Variable light does more work in Bridge up front.  Controlled light does more image selection work in iView.  The second demo also shows a more thorough discussion of some of the iView tools.

5) Am I correct in noting that there is NO Helpfile for iView?

There is an extensive PDF manual.

Peter

Thank you for the quick response.

1) I used R&F as you had suggested in the video. Perhaps I didn't do it right. I'll have to go over that section.

3) So are these 2 different workflows and we should select the one that feels best?

5) I actually also have the manual sent with the program, but a helpfile would have been nice. For example, how do you delete from the catalog without sending the original to the recycle bin? I can't seem to find that anywhere.

I have been going through the CD's and am up to #10 on CD #1. I use Windows and maybe some of the questions I have are just Mac/Win differences, but here they are....

1) I have changed the preferences in each of the programs as you suggested in prior lessons, but when I drag a folder into iView, the thumbnails show me only the stars and the filename. Your video seems to show the color label also.

2) Where do you do your keywording? in Bridge or iView? If you do it in Bridge, does the whole system get transferred into iView?

3) Perhaps I was confused, but looking at the chapter titles in CD #2, they are very similar to CD #1 and what is 'variable light' versus 'controlled light'?

4) Your book labels the RAW_ folders with a 3 digit sequence number and a 6 digit date (last addition), but the CD says to give it a content name

5) Am I correct in noting that there is NO Helpfile for iView?
