Title: All ImageIngester Users Please Read
Post by: peterkrogh on April 05, 2009, 08:11:32 AM
There is a bug in Photoshop that will make Photoshop disregard all metadata in a file.  This happens when the Date Created field is blank.
In order to avoid this problem, set up ImageIngester to put the date the file was created in the IPTC date field.

In your Content metadata template, paste one of the following macros:

{@exif.DateTimeOriginal,1,4}-{@exif.DateTimeOriginal,5,2}-{@exif.DateTimeOriginal,7,2}

or this:

{@datetime,10,2}:{@datetime,12,2}:{@datetime,14,2}

Peter--

Thanks for confirming that #1 (YYYY-MM-DD) works...

I think we have this one nailed down now... waiting for some more confirmations from PS CS4 users will make it certain.

Thank You for Your help! I hope more CS4 users can confirm this issue so You can implement a workaround.

In the meantime I written a brief Bridge script to update faulty dates written so far:

http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=3912.msg22051#msg22051

Should work well to set IPTC Date Created files correctly for images ingested so far.

Adobe knows about the bug, and has it on the fix list.

Massimo--

I don't think I will implement a workaround, but maybe just add a caution to the web site not to allow the field to be empty if PS CS4 is being used. It seems (pending further confirmation) that the default you get froom II when you click the Reset button works OK.

The problem, as I understand it, is mainly that already-ingested images with empty dates don't work, right?

Yes, it seems that empty dates give problems to CS4 but using the Reset settings works (because the date with "-" separators is acceptable by CS4). I however prefer to include the time to obtain more precise info so I use the modified macro listed.

Because Adobe admitted the bug I agree that using a filled date with an acceptable format (the one from Reset or a custom one with "-" and "T" between date and time) works ok.

The Bridge macro I posted can solve the problem for already ingested files.

By the way, there are problems in II3 parsing parts of date in the EM Catalog field, because commas are taken as separators, so {@datetime,1,4} does not work. It should be nice touch to put an option to exclude commas from being parsed in those fields (mantaining semicolons of course) so Keywords, Catalog and People fields can accept commas as part of macros. Or to parse macros before item separators in those fields.

Thank You for Your help.

I seem to be having this problem too but the fix does not seem to work for me.

I have CS3 version of Bridge and Photoshop.

After I do the ingestion with ImageIngester and then it pops up Bridge I do not see any of the data I entered in ImageIngester appear in any of the file info.

Is there something I am doing wrong?

I setup ImageIngester based on your video that is on the ImageIngester web site.

Thanks

Keith

Keith,
If you are using with raw files, why don't you paste the text from a sidecar file into a forum post here (or send it to me if you don't want to broadcast your contact information).  Open the sidecar file with a text editor or word processor, copy everything, and then paste.
That's probably the easiest way to see what's going wrong.

Peter I have sent you an email with the sidecar file attached

Thanks

Keith,
There is no metadata entered into this file. I see the ImageIngester Macros, but no values.  What version are you using, and how are you entering the metadata.

Can you make a screenshot of the program as you are entering metadata.

I ingested images from my memory card that are in RAW format
I have metadata setup
The only thing I dont have checked is the "Merge XMPs"
I have items checked in the keywords window for catalog and keywords using macros like {@client.name}
After the ingest the program brings up Bridge automatically and I view one of the images and see none of the information that was entered in imageingester
I open the xmp file and there is some data there not everything but some.

Why am I not seeing the metadata when I view the picture in Bridge?
Nor are the images preset to the keyword and catalogs sets I flagged?

I understood bridge should see the sidecar file and read it but it does not seem to be doing that
I am new to this so I think there is something I am missing in the process and documentation

Any help would be appreciated

thanks
Keith

Keith,
The file you sent me did not have metadata in it.  The createor name and address looked like this:

 <Iptc4xmpCore:CreatorContactInfo rdf:parseType="Resource">
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrExtadr>{@IPTC.Address}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrExtadr>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrCity>{@IPTC.City}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrCity>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrRegion>{@IPTC.State}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrRegion>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrPcode>{@IPTC.PostalCode}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrPcode>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrCtry>{@IPTC.Country}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrCtry>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiTelWork>{@IPTC.Phone}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiTelWork>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiEmailWork>{@IPTC.EMail}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiEmailWork>
    <Iptc4xmpCore:CiUrlWork>{@IPTC.Website}</Iptc4xmpCore:CiUrlWork>
   </Iptc4xmpCore:CreatorContactInfo>

Can you fill in one of these fields (like your city, for instance) and see if ImageIngester puts that information in the file?

I suggest setting up to test on a card with no more than 3 images.
Download
Look at the file in Bridge
If no metadata, open the sidecar file, and look for the fields above

see if u can tell why no metadata is being attached to the file.
Peter

I can seem to find a solution to this problem. The data is in the xmp file but is not appearing in Bridge. I've tried using the default settings and made sure there is always a date present. Can anyone tell me what the best solution is?

Thanks

Old to DAM but new to II and IV.  Have II set up pretty much the way Peter has been showing it in workshops [specifically at FotoCare] but am unable to get Keywords and Catalogue info from II into LightRoom.  I do have solution #1 entered into the Date Created field but get none of the Keyword info automatically entered into the necessary fields.  Any suggestions?  Would a screen shot help?

Nat--

You need to check the XMP (sidecar) to see if the metadata is there. If it is not, that leads to one set of possibilities. If it is, there is another set.

If you can't resolve the issue, send me (1) the external log, (2) a file to be ingested (e.g., straight from the camera), (3) the ingested image, and (4) the produced XMP.

Also, be aware that if an XMP already exists, II will not write a new one nor merge metadata to the existing one.

Marc,

Most of the metadata is being written to the XMP [there is no preexisting XMP] but the keywords are not.  I will do some random shooting tomorrow so that I can send you the files that you've asked for.

TIA

I still have metadata in ImageIngester than PS4 does not show in jpgs. They are jpg images generated as jpgs in the camera. Has this been fixed? (I'm not enough of a programmer to understand the inserts described elsewhere as a possible fix.) Thank you.

J.W. (name?)
Does the metadata show in Bridge?

Hi - My II-ingested jpgs continue not to show keywords or description in Bridge CS4. Unfortunately, I am unable to follow the scripting noted above, so I wonder whether I just need to discontinue using ImageIngester until Adobe fixes this bug? If so, would you suggest simply copying from the memory card to the hard drive and opening in Bridge? Thanks - John (J.W.)

Curious, but is this still a problem? I'm re-working the wife's workflow in her studio, and she does use Image Ingester and of course, Photoshop ... still on CS4 though. Is this something to be concerned about still?
